This doesn't really follow. There are other festivals that include greenfields-style setups without any overt left-leaning festival ethos (I'm thinking Electric Picnic / Body and Soul for a start). It's not a binary option of Eavis or Branson.

I think you're right about the ethos of Gladto not being strictly left-leaning in any case. Andrew Kerr and Arabella Churchill wouldn't exactly fit into any left-wing catagorisation - rather more liberal/new-age/anti-establishment/progressive territory. All the spiritual ley line guff etc, as well as much of the green/eco/charitable ethos exists outside any real left/right ideological divide.

The thing is, as several people pointed out, Glastonbury has had to defend itself from right wing attempts to destroy it. It's not necessarily left wing, its anti right wing ideology which has tried to destroy it.

How are free/private schools a 'choice' if you are on a low income? I find right wing people seem to ignore the financial context when they pretend that they believe in choice and freedom- if you're rich, you have all the freedom in the world, but if you're poor you don't get a crumb of that 'freedom'.

With superstar headliners, extensive TV coverage, expensive tickets, lots of apolitical middle class people attending etc, you can hardly say that this is still the case.

BUT

You will really struggle to find many conservative musicians, comedians, performers, artists etc. People in artistic jobs are nearly always left-wing/liberal. I don't think it is unreasonable to suggest that every person in charge of a field in Glastonbury would describe themselves as on the left too.

The reason most Glastonbury obsessives keep coming back every year is because of the attention to detail and because there is so much to see and do. And the reason Glastonbury has all this is because everyone involved in the running of the festival is a bit of a hippie.

Glastonbury may be not as much about active political campaigning as it used to be, but things like Shangri La are a result of the left-wing nature of the festival.
