What do you burn?

Having been traveling to glastonbury since the nineties i know the benefit of a good fire, whether to sit around with friends or to attract new ones, to cook on or most importantly to keep you warm in the early hours at the stone circle.

Over the years my festival has changed hugely, first festival, no ticket, little money, no tent...a bin liner and a can of lynx if i remember right were the only luggage. Now we take the whole family, Me Wife and three children and the kids love a good fire even more than dad.

Over the years we have tried burning just about anything that moves....more memorable things .Blankets from Joe Bananas Just for reference these burn with a beautiful blue green flame. Mountains of paper ups have been sacrificed also. The last few years we have been a little more prepared with self lighting bbQ bags and fake logs that are meant to burn for 3 hours (bollocks by the way)..

This year i plan on bringing some big logs from a tree we felled ealylier this year... probably another journey back to the car just for these..(is this to far to go far a decent fire?)

So what have you burnt, what are you planning to burn and has anyone ever found the fire wood store that i hear mentioned every year but never find.

I love a good fire. One of my fave parts of the festival is sitiing around the fire at night chatting/drinking/whatevering.

There has been wood piles dotted around the various campsites in years gone by, but they do tend to go very quickly so you need to get at them not long after the gates open on a Wednesday.

Also, there is/was a wood shop on the path between the Pyramid and John Peel I think. Generally sells bags of the compressed logs and two of those will last a fair few hours.

Since I stopped going with my uncle I don't really have any kind of fire but when we went together we'd have one each night. He came pretty prepared with some kind of fire pit and a load of wood he collects throughout the year, the man can get a fire going anywhere! Even with damp wood if needs be. One of the things I miss about not going with him anymore, really did love sitting around it at night.

Just curious - where do people build campfires? Where we camp there's just no room for one and if we left that much space in the middle of our campsite someone would pitch there.

Much as I wouldn't go back there, it was nice to have campfires at Reading. Having said that, I spend a lot less time at the campsite at Glasto.

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
    • Easily my favourite set of the day.
