The Vinyl Thread

I ended up with two dud copies of Weird Scenes by the Doors. Returned the first one only to have the second skip in precisely the same place. Expected more from Rhino - so sent them a mail rather than go back again to Tower in Dublin. Got the following back pretty quick from them:

"It has come to our attention that the A & B sides of this release were cut "too hot", causing skips on some players.

We have since re-cut the A & B sides of this release, and have replacements available.

Please reply with your shipping information, a digital photo of your LPs and your store receipt.

Upon receipt of your email, I will send out your replacement LP as soon as possible."

Its all part of the fun I spose but you do wonder what the fark is going on with some of these pressing plants when they only acknowledge a fundamental flaw in the process when you call them on it. Nothing else has been announced.

I went to Rockaboom records in Leicester. Got there for 6.30am, about 30 people in the queue ahead of me, shop opened at 8.30am, got served at 10.30.

I left there with everything I wanted:

the dan le sac/scroobius pip 7"

the quantic 7"

bonobo 10"

hospital records 12"

It was good fun in the queue chatting to people around you about what they were after, what music they were into, gigs they'd been to etc. That's what its all about tbh.

Rockaboom were only letting people buy 1 copy of whatever they wanted. Other shops should do the same, if they aren't already.

I've never bothered with vinyl as it was just before my time but I've been reading around and I think I'm going to start (probably after glasto). I think I'll probably buy the turntable that The Nal started this thread with because it seems a good choice. Other than a turntable and speakers is there any other equipment needed?

(Sorry, complete newcomer)

I was salivating over a mate's The Aeroplane Flies High re-release today, I don't know how he got the £1 million to fund the purchase, but I bloody want it.

You'll need an amp. You can get one with a pre amp built in.

Turnbtable to amp to speakers and you're away!

Joined Third Man Records Vault the other night in a moment of madness for the Lazaretto split coloured Vinyl package <3

I may do that. Was in third man in Nashville a while back. Tiny place. Unreal blues collection though. Bought about 15 records in there.

Thanks for the info! I'll get started after glasto.

Already got a few knocking around from times where I saw bargins. Got Scary Monsters LP at the weekend for £3.50 so even if it isn't in the best condition it's not oo much to loose :)

Yeah I just watched that. The secret tracks sound crap though (both the quality and the actual song)

More of a gimmick for vinyl nerds.

I'd have preferred it if some of them hadnt have been so overtly announced.

Ha yes that would have been cool, to have none of them annouced and the gimmicks all spread by word of mouth.

Imagine discovering them on your own!!

Went in September. Bought a whole load of Charley Patton, Blind Willie McTell and Mississippi Shieks stuff. Have you been?

lived in Nashville for 5 months. The sole purpose of that visit was to see the store. Went about 10 times and saw Seasick Steve play in the Blue room. Jack walked passed me the first time I went. Nearly had a heart attack. You've been since I have so it's bigger now, the novelties section got added the week after I came home.

    • The Great Fete Festival (Sunday Only) Ocean Colour Scene day on Tickets For Good.
    • I was also at Ghost but seated. When they scanned my ticket's and they came up as seated they printed a small ticket with the seat number info.
    • I was standing for Ghost at O2 London last year where they put the phone in a pouch beforehand so I assume they're is a mechanism in place for people in seats.
    • Most likely not, keeping an eye on Tixel and Twickets might be the best option.
