Greatest Albums

So, in an attempt to broaden my musical horizons (although I am not pigeon holed in any musical style, if I like it I like it) I wondered what the most credible top 100 albums of all time list is ie Rolling Stone, NME etc.

Any suggestions as to which list is the more credible and why, would be greatly appreciated and then I shall start to work my way through it

I think it's about saying "Give this a go, you might like it, you might not. But there's a good chance you might not have heard it before" Might change your life. pretty much the best gift you can give anybody, that.

Not Greatest Albums, but tracks. A few years ago I got back from Glastonbury and was telling my then 10 year old nephew about some of the bands I'd seen and he kept saying "Who? never heard of them." And I realised his musical history was a bit lacking.

So I decided to put together a CD entitled The 10 Songs Everyone Should Know.

I started with my list and decided it was a bit subjective so asked friends, including some people in bands, festival promoters and the like, for their thoughts.

The criteria I suggested was "Without X other things wouldn't have happened." In other words they had to be significant or influential.

It caused quite some heated discussion amongst a few but I managed to work out a list based on their responses and the following is what I ended up with (in chronological.order).

As I had room on the CD I ended with 20 songs. It's still a bit skewed to the sixties. Also I posed the question about ten years ago and if I asked the question today I'd probably get some different responses. But, for what it's worth, here's the list.

2. 1953 - Frank Sinatra - Fly Me to the Moon

3. 1956 - Elvis Presley- Hound dog

4. 1959 - Chuck Berry - Johnny B Goode

5. 1965 - Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone

6. 1965 - The Who - My Generation

7. 1967 - Aretha Franklin - Respect

8. 1967 - Beach Boys - Good Vibrations

9. 1968 - Beatles - Hey Jude

10. 1970 - Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Chile

11. 1971 - Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar

12. 1971 - John Lennon - Imagine

13. 1976 - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

14. 1976 - Sex Pistols - Anarchy In the UK

Songs that fit grumpy's "Without X other things wouldn't have happened" - then I'd put Tomorrow Never Knows or Strawberry Fields Forever above Hey Jude

Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde

and there's probably more but they're the three that for me come close to the perfect album.
