I have walking boots, wellies and waiders and have used them all at Glastonbury. If I had to pick just one of those three now I reckon I'd run with the walking boots (if you'll excuse the expression). I've got Brasher Superlite boots which are like wearing slippers and don't let the water in.

Boots and gaiters are impractical and only worn by the consciously "outdoorsy" types who spent most of the festival after day 1 with laces soaked in 5 kinds of mud, piss and shit.

Considering they saw some of the heaviest weather worthy farm could offer, I feel almost sad for your loss. Great value indeed, good luck with finding a suitable replacement pair.

Mine are some workboots I've had for a few years, the soles are good, they fit my feet like old friends and are perfectly waterproof still, holding up to last year well.

18 Glastonbury fests under my belt and I reckon boots and gaiters are the only way ahead. Bit of a clart to take off at night but other than that comfy, dry feet and under the gaiters absolutely pristine (yes I did say pristine) laces after wading through some of the most despicable muddy puddles!

I'd challenge that. For £40 I bought some from a farmers shop in Wales and they're like running trainers inside - so soft and springy (ideal for spending all day walking over rough ground) - and crucially when you sit down they don't dig into your legs. Sometimes it pays to buy once, buy right.

Just don't buy anything a) at a festival or at a 'camping' shop.

I'm not 'consciously outdoorsy"', but I have really good boots and gaiters, so last year that's what I took as I didn't own any wellies. My feet were comfortable and I had none of the chafing associated with wellingtons, but I found myself in envy of those who could easily slip off their muddy footwear and sit down in the tea areas of some of the small venues. I'll be investing in rubber for next year.

I doubt many would notice or care, but Brasher boots, while absolutely fine by all accounts, are favoured by more senior ramblers.

I'm split between the two it has to be said, having tried both on several occasions. However I would say that it's not always so easy to get the wellies off. A friend of mine got stuck in his for half an hour at Reading last year. Not a case of drunken tomfoolery either, he was genuinely stuck!

I bought some wellies from that big shoe shop that seems to be on every trading estate - Brantanos or some such.

Anyhoo, I opted for the expensive £12 ones with the soft insole. Did a great job in 2011 and at BT last year. But as mentioned before, it's all about the socks.

But none of that matters because it's going to be sandals all the way in 2013!
