Would this year have been a quagmire?!

Most of my best memories of Glasto are in the muddy years. It brings a bit of the bulldog spirit in me, I still look back at similar memories, watching friends losing their Welles in mud, other people trying to pull them out and losing their Welles as well. I remember the quagmire years more than the hotter years. Not sure if I enjoyed then as much at the time, but the photos I treasure the most are of mud!

Saying that i would still prefer a warm and sunny festival

We were working last year so was set up Tuesday, wasn't raining then and we sat up at the Park Tuesday evening in the dry.

I do remember waking up Wednesday though to what sounded like pretty heavy rain, I only got out the tent properly when I heard the first cheer start over by the JP side, we were above the farm house and had a pretty good view of the site - could see the shadow moving across as the sun came through and the cheer that swept across the site.

In 2006, the last fallow year, I remember the weather of Glasto weekend being absolutely gorgeous. I was sat in a friends garden in somerset cursing it. It would have been one of the all time perfect glasto weathers. 25c and sunny for all 5 days.

Sods law it will be this year too

As Neil said, rain in the build up doesn't make too much difference. Get some sun and some wind and 150 000 pairs of feet compacting the mud and that site can go from quagmire to perfect in an afternoon.

Actually out of interest which weekend would it have been? Is it the last full weekend in June (so the sunday has to be in June, but the monday can be in July)? I'm guessing it would be starting in a weeks time rather than 2 weeks time....?

Yep, 2006 was scorching all summer iirc...I remember having people round my house for a BBQ and party on a Sunday afternoon as England were playing Ecuador in the World Cup 2nd round match, lots of regular Glasto goers came along and I recall one of my non-festival going mates saying 'Wouldn't you lot all be off at Glastonbury this weekend had it been on?'

A few of us noted the blistering weather and I said 'Sods law in a year off it's really nice!'

In fact out of the 7 Glastonbury's I've done, only 2010 was completely dry although I suppose 2008 and 2009 were OK as they only rained on one night.

yep - the dates would have been Wed 20th to Sunday 24th June.

It's always the last full weekend in June.

Always remember watching this at the time when I started watching Glastonbury on TV each year (had seen snippets on C4 of 94 & 95)

Billy Bragg having a rant about the mud :)

Went on a family holiday to Dorset & Somerset in early 1998 and we went through Pilton, remember trying to see where the Pyramid/Main stage was, completely unaware it was a couple of miles away from where we were :D

Interesting - I was looking into this yesterday and the festival's Wiki page (not a definitive source admittedly) says it's "The weekend of June that falls closest to the Summer solstice"

that might actually be right (I'd have to look back across loads of years to check), but even if it was it still pretty much always pans out as being the last full weekend in June anyway.

Yeah, that;s why I asked. Usually all 3 days of the fest have to lie in June, but I also remember there being something about the Solstice and how traditionally they had it so that the travelling community could go to stonehenge and then make their way to glasto. This year is the only permutation of dates that can cause a bit of ambiguity.

hang on tho ....

If Glasto-worker has posted the right dates for next year (excluding the error with the month) - and I believe he has - then it gets to prove it's not "the weekend nearest to the solstice".

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
