Nope - most are operated as charities.

Meanwhile, the NHS has to pick up the huge costs of private healthcare fuck-ups - such as with the PiP implants.

Only sick people support private healthcare.

Well my sister had ivf on the nhs and had not 1, not 2 but triplets. Sister and her husband tried for 15 years without having success and went the ivf route.

To see those kids grow up to parents who were not interested in money, highly paid jobs, material things in life or foreign holidays is a wonderful sight. They are 7 now and are wonderful children. Although sister is a one parent family with triplets now as her husband dies just after christmas.

So was it worth it? of course it was.

Did anyone catch the Channel4 news last night? Some guy from the IVF authority made an interesting argument about him not really agreeing with IVF for women later in life and we should address the reasons why some women choose to leave it so late.

On the private health care thing, I can get it through work but turned it down. This prompted loads of emails from HR about how I didn't understand how good a deal it is and it's free for me. I replied that it had sod all to do with cost, and just that I don't believe that having more money than others should entitle me to earlier or better treatment. It blew their minds. Apparently i'm the only person in the whole of the organisation that doesn't want it.

yep its a taxable benefit, I don't know how many people bother to tell HMRC though.. Thinks ours is with CIGNA and is so bad that I'd rather have the money and can't be bothered getting my tax code change constantly as the price goes up.

I have private health care via wifes company. Never used it... But if I ever needed a scan quickly then fuck everyone else... Glad I would have access to that scan...

I don't know... For whatever I might need a scan for in years to come... Cancer / Tumours etc...

Its all well having your morals but they won't do you much good when you had to wait six months for a scan and it costs you your life...

The fact I have not had to use my private health care so far is testament to how good the NHS in general is... but it does woefully let people down in certain areas...

I had to once turn down a job I was offered, because I refused to accept private healthcare as a part of the package, and they refused to offer the job without the inclusion of private healthcare.

That was their loss, not mine.

What are peoples thoughts on IVF ?

I think its a shocking waste of money and has no place being funded on the NHS.

I couldn't imagine having a kid at 42... Being in my 30s and having one is hard enough lol...

Hmmm, bit late but I have to say I don't agree with ivf on nhs.

I was in a long term relationship, kids were ruled out medically, after 12 months of trying.

I had the same opinion before as after. It would have been an option and a very real one but one that would have sat uncomfortably with me. Especially as we could afford to pay for it at the time.

But that's me, I can understand if money was an issue it could have been different.

But making such a decision for yourself is one thing, suggesting that NHS treatment should not be available to others is quite different.

And of course adoption is a good thing in principle and should be made easier (and, particularly in the interest of the children waiting to be placed, faster), but supporting adoption is quite different from saying people shouldn't have access to IVF, unless they are able to pay for it.

Not sure if it's an 'acceptable' opinion, but I'm not sure men should get to have a say in such issues. No man can possibly know what it's like to give birth, with everything it entails, and seeing as it's possibly the only reason for our existence, nor can any man know what it feels like to not be able to give birth.

I feel the same about abortions too. Ideally it would be good for both parents to agree, but if a woman wants an abortion and the man doesn't, or vice-versa, then the woman's feelings should take priority (most of the time).

I might change those opinions.....

obviously not. There are plenty of women happy enough to never have children, and all the options in-between

as i said (I might change my opinion), they're just thoughts, and not totally thought through. Everything depends on every single situation.

I just think for men to be saying treatment shouldn't be available isn't as important as how women feel. In general, it affects them more than men

Following on from TBs utter bollocks about men...

Since having my kid I have been met with tremendous sexism regarding men and children. From patronising comments about "isn't he a good Dad" just because I am very hands on with her (could you imagine saying that to a women) to dam right offensive stuff about not being allowed an opinion on breast feeding and the pros, cons and issues surrounding it.

Luckily I have a wife who totally involves me in everything, confides in me and respects my input. I feel sorry for a lot of other couples who prefer men to be the traditional alpha male man (although that probably isn't fair on some men)...
