I know that Sabbath seem to be likely to play but really would they shift that many tickets aimed at the younger generation, R&Ls demographic? Perhaps including more dance & urban music will attract the young 'uns & the other two headliners will keep them their for the weekend.

Which I can see working out ok as Cremfields kind of went tits up this year & a lot of indie/rock is now cross over with the latest dance scene whereas Creamfields as been predominantly house, mainstream, no idea.

But would this still pull in young 'uns who look at the headliners as the main pull?

Edit: Basically I think Sabbath are too old & irrelevant for the direction R&L might be/has to/trying to head in.

But the "legendary" sets recently have been far more relevant to the youth except perhaps GnR & maybe Pulp who co-headlined with a teenage relevant band.

I think some of the acts booked for the other stages/tents will get bigger crowds the night Sabbath play. & hardcore/casual fans will have seen them at DL after a time away. So why bother booking them?

The Cure played to hardly anybody, which is a shame as they are streets ahead of both Maccabees and Sabbath. The best set of Leeds this year and hardly anybody was around to see it.

I'd argue that The Cure was a better booking than Sabbath will be, just as I think everyone who wanted to see Sabbath if they attend festivals would've been at Download, and if they weren't at Download it's likely they weren't at R&L, whereas people who like The Cure may not have gone to Bestival in 2011 and been at other festivals instead (such as I.)

Biffy now up as a SR, I could see it being Sabbath, Biffy and Eminem, think it caters for a wide range and still will attract the young audience (provided they get the rest of the line up right) and still sell tickets to a slightly older audience with the two more older hedliners

I'm going to say Green Day as the third headliner. If Biffy can headline with a country wide arena tour, then a solitary show at The Emirates shouldn't limit Green Day should it?

Yes if previous years/headliners are anything to go by, no if you take the approach that they can do what the hell they like and these patterns don't mean anything.

Also they may be willing to have one headliner that has their own arena shows/concert in competion for ticket sales but would thay have two in the same year?

I don't believe in these bulls*it patterns either, its just that a lot of people on here have said Green Day won't headline because of their stadium show. I agree that they can do what they please, if they want Green Day to headline (hypothetically) then they want Green Day to headline, simple as.

As for having two touring headliners in the same year, who knows? Has there been any incidences of that in the past?

Well they very rarely (if ever) have headliners who are doing their own outdoor show the same Summer so I doubt that situation has ever arisen.

Like you say it depends how badly they want these bands and how much they fear that the band's own show/s will affect ticket sales. They obviously will but to what extent and whether FR would want to risk having two headliners rather than just one with those concerns is unfortunately pure speculation.

What is clear is that FR have accepted that they need to change the way that they do things and over the last year or two have shown that they are trying new things, which may mean that a lot of these patterns or precedents that have been set could be tested or cast aside.

However even without the pattern/precedent I think it's a pretty risky move having two headliners who have sold a lot of tickets for their fans to see them in the six months before the festival. If you've already got tickets to see a band and they're announced as headliners then it isn't going to seem that special as if it was your only chance to see them. Doubly (sp?) so with two bands.
