Lol, t-shirt sales.

Arcade Fire could never play Download, aren't a heavier band and have a different demographic within R+L. They're not comparable to SOAD.

Bands could still announce tour plans up until mid February. I don't think you can rule out any band on the "we've not heard anything" line until then.

SOAD really aren't that big. If they play R+L without having a successful new album, they won't headline.

Still does not detract from that Blink were a success for the festival at the time, however much people on here thought they weren't big enough, just like the argument when MCR weren't big enough and 30stm wouldn't sub. People less popular than system are at the minute in the uk have headlined.

Arcade fire and SOAD are comparable, because they've both played R&L before and both fit the demographic of the festival, we're not talking about download at all. The point is at the time AF headlined they were no bigger, if not smaller in the uk than SOAD are at this time.

As far as system being a sub we can because if they were touring they would only headline , maybe another festival, but if they don't headline they won't be on this years R&L bill.

I'll remember that last statement.

I mentioned it a while ago I could see it happen (after one of the bookers saying something about wanting 2/3 British bands to headline but has never managed to do it) simply because they are along with Muse the biggest British band out there and R&L is a British fest so sooner or later it may be worth chucking them up on the bill just the once but Coldplay don't seem to be that fond on non-Glasto fests tho.

They never got the chance to do the arena tour because they went on hiatus, if they toured now it would be arenas.

They are as big or bigger than those at the tome of headlining due to the fact they have only had one UK show in 7 years, and only 12 in Europe in that time. As much as all of the above factor are true when it comes to booking bands for headlining so does the demand and the number of chances for people to see them, If people haven't had the chance to see them there will be a big demand for it.

If system had have done a whole load of shows I'd be more inclined to go the other way and say they would sub, but current climate and lack of shows means they would only headline.

Thoroughly agree, they've been a headline-size band for years and years and have never played while the likes of Muse have headlined twice in that period. They just aren't suited to who R&L are trying to attract or the image that they're trying to convey (although the difference gets smaller and smaller every year), although I can imagine if times were hard they'd jump at the chance.

I'll make one last comment on SOAD... I don't know why people think they will sub... they are clearly not a subbing band anymore... I can totally understand the not playing argument but they really don't need to accept a sub slot anywhere now... Plus they had one of the biggest crowds I have seen at Download and that was against a huge second stage headliner in Alice Cooper... they have the fanbase...

As far as record sales etc metal bands don't really get platinum records over here in the UK (other than Linkin Park)... Black Sabbath don't even have a platinum record in the UK... Slipknot don't (and they have headlined three fests in recent years)... Metallica and Iron Maiden only have 5 between the two of them (consider how many albums they have released and that they are probably the two biggest metal acts of all time)... Rammstein haven't even had a gold album over here and yet they play huge arena tours and headline UK fests... none of these bands play sub slots at UK fests anymore I very much doubt SOAD would.

SOAD would easily do an arena tour if they toured the UK now... they don't need to take a sub slot at Reading. I would argue they are easily one of the biggest metal acts of the modern era. I would also argue System would be much more suited to headlining Reading than Black Sabbath... I know most of my friends who love Foos, Blink 182, Green Day etc love System.

Ps I don't think they are going to play anyway... if they do any UK fest this year it will be Soni imo

    • sub yes I could see but I don't think they get 1hr 15, a headliner starting at 18:15 though is unlikely. Even the recent co-headlines that have had like 1hr 15 then a 1hr 30 after were on 8pm or just before, you are trailing behind more than 1.5 hours then. In that scenario some 3rd down bands are only starting at 18:15 and some haven't lol. I agree they won't not book them due to this but it won't be 6 headliners. It would be 5 headliners and you wouldn't want to see 5 headliners booked but Biffy were to not be thouhgt of as an option for one. Wolf Alice on the other hand could sub no bother and you'd think nothing of it. I'm not so sure Biffy would get headline though after the festival choice in Kendal this year.
    • Definitely. UKIP also used Merkel welcoming 1 million Afgans to Europe in 2015 during the brexit vote.   Politicians in other countries within the EU know the are going to lose voters to parties to the right of them over stuff like this and they've no control over it.
    • I think it will very much vary on who there is to book who they know will sell out a day.    They’ve co-headline and full headline stuff in future, there no reason at all they won’t do it again, even if it means cutting someone’s set by 15 mins or having a band less in a big bands day…   They’re not going to not book Foo fighters and instead get the equivalent of Florence and C&S just to not have a band do a big set…   …unless of course they think it will make them more money…
    • Maybe some right wing leaders like Meloni are just playing to their base, like Reform have been here talking about them ending up at Calais.
    • Citizenship via investment programs basically work by saying if you invest this much in our economy (say buy a property worth x) then we will either grant you citizenship or residency with a route to it. The EU has rules on how low countries can set the bar. Montenegro was one of the easier ones to get and they've had to tighten it up.
