Some bands accept subbing positions at other festivals than ones they could headline.

I do think it's unlikely though.

Rage were booked/did headline Reading before (there's a long going debate if it was them or Prodigy that actually did tho) and there 4th mainstage slot last time they played R&L before the reunion was because they asked to be fitted in the last sec. There's plenty of acts who have reformed like Soundgarden, Darkness etc don't headline fests on the comeback and the act needs to be taken on their own merits and not reform buzz otherwise Bloc Party will headlining after their 2 year split.

R&L is suited to thier demographic! Theyve played it before multiple times. They are bigger and more popular than bands like paramore and Melvin has said he'd be pushing them in the future, they are arguably as big or bigger than bands such as blink 182, the darkness, arcade fire, MCR all were at the time of their headline performances.

The exact same arguments came out when Blink 182 and MCR were rumoured and people were saying green day are bound to be added above them. Don't believe it if you don't want to but 'if' they were to play R&L again it would be as headliners.

They certainly do, but I don't believe that either Rage or SOAD are one of those bands, which is why I said they won't play unless they headline.

It depends on how desperate either are for money or to get their name back in lights to take a step down, and I don't think either of them are.

I said 'more suited', implying a relative sliding scale. R+L has changed since they last played, and away from the heavier acts.

Paramore are definitely more popular at relevant than SOAD atm. Blink headlined on a hope that their comeback would be bigger than it was and wasn't that successful in the end. The Darkness is universally accepted as a poor choice. Arcade Fire are a completely different demographic to SOAD so irrelevant to this. MCR were booked hoping their new album would be more successful than it was (there was an argument about this a few pages back).

You seem to have the misconception that I dislike SOAD. I don't, they'd be one of the bands I'd most love to be announced and go see. I just don't think they're popular enough amongst the R+L crowd to headline it, nor so huge generally that they'd be unable to sub any festival.

I think Sonisphere may have Black Sabbath and Depeche Mode.

I think we could well get 3 of : Mumford & Sons, The Prodigy, Blur, Arctic Monkeys, Biffy Clyro. I would guess at Mumford, The Prodigy, Arctic Monkeys out of them pretty uninspiring though.

I don't get why people seem to think Depeche Mode would play Sonisphere? They really fit in with Rammstein, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slipknot and Biffy Clyro.

Looking at the Slam Dunk lineup we really are not missing out on any amazing acts.

They sold out Milton Keynes and are coming back from a very successfull album.

I so badly want SOAD to headline R+L at some point. As I said last time this discussion came up, I think they make way more sense than Sabbath tbh. They are the only metal act I could see headlining Reading and Leeds and going down well other than obviously Metallica (I'd describe Iron Maiden and AC/DC as more classic rock, but chuck those in there as well if you want).

Thought about asking this yesterday - is this the first time T In The Park has had a non-indie / rock / metal headliner? Obviously it's moved a long way towards pop on the undercard in recent years but they've always held off booking them as headliners until now? It just worries me if a festival like that, which was more-or-less R+L in Scotland in the type of acts it booked, can change in a relatively short space of time, maybe R+L could too...

I thought they were immense at download 2011.

According to a few of those who had seen them pre hiatus on here they were poor in comparison.

The atmosphere certainly wasn't that of a let down. The circle pits went past the second barrier and not one person I talked to didn't enjoy them.

But blink were successful for R&L they broke the record for the number of t-shirt sales that year.

We're talking of headliners so arcade fire do apply, as once again they fall into the R&L demographic.

I don't have that misconception that you don't like SOAD, I just don't think you realise why I was saying they would only headline.

Unless its out of the blue I can't see system playing further down the bill anyway, we would know they were around by now.

The only way they could possibly be playing this is them at the top, as it would all be getting kept hush hush until they are at a point in which they are ready to announce a whole load of shows at once.

I still have doubts about Sabbath headlining after all anyone is basing this on is the "talks" they were in with R&L. So a heavier type is still possible.

OK, interesting. Rihanna is the first time T has had an out-and-out headliner who could never have played at R+L up to this point in history given their booking policy. We can argue about Snow Patrol and Coldplay, I suppose, but I don't think they're outside the realms of possibility. They've both played before, I think?
