Who though? The only real pop punk band who fits that slot atm are Paramore and they played last year... Fall Out Boy could have possibly got there eventually but I doubt they could if they came back now... and You Me At Six are still a way off..

On the point of it not mattering who plays second top, I think that's silly, the headliner wants the sub to whip the crown up into a frenzy so that they are ready for their set, if there is little cross over then it probably has less chance of happening as people would probably leave to see something similar.

Weezer are touring Australia at the start of the year and apparently have been working on a new album so an appearance may be possible, although I'm not sure in what slot. I can't see them any higher than last time, that slot was based on the demand to see them and their large amount of fans based on their history of work, I can't see how either of those could have increased much over the last couple of years.

Apart from the fact they were band of the weekend at both sites and pretty much blew everyone else off stage. I'm sure that the bookers would have noted that performance and had it in their minds from last time with a view to stepping up in the future. They certainly haven't lost any of their appeal.

They have the songs, they have the appeal and are a great festival band, a 70 minute slot would be great just before the headliner.

Prodigy could easily headline a fest next year... plenty of options and after headlining a massive fest like Download why would they sub at Reading under an arguably smaller headliner... Jack White I don't see touring... Soundgarden would be amazing but dont see Reading so blatantly copying and arguably Soundgarden and Black Sabbath as top two really doesn't fit at Reading... Tool have taken so long to tour the UK surely they will headline a fest when they bother to play here... NIN if they do tour in 2013 then fair enough but again I don't see why they woudln't headline a fest after a decent time away.

All far far closer to each other than bloc party x sabbath. With enough crossover appeal to keep most of the fans there afterwards.

I just don't see the point in announcing sabbath (not that I believe they will play) then having any indie sub headliner, it'll detract a lot of day tick items away, there is far more bands that fit than bloc party.

Paramore and The Cure have similar fanbases? Hmmm. Did you see their respective crowds? I don't really see how any of the pop-punk bands mentioned are that much better of a fit than Bloc Party. Is there that much crossover, really, just because both played Download?

I think what it comes down to is that Black Sabbath don't really fit the festival these days. Sad but true. And as a result, if they do play it will be with a much more recent band with a proven history of popularity at the festival before them, without necessarily sounding much like them. They did it this year with Paramore and The Cure. Bloc Party would fit the bill under Sabbath.

Imo.

More crossover was the term I used and yes they do have more crossover than bloc party and sabbath. I think Hayley Williams asked for that slot because she was a big fan of the cure, I also think the cure's catalogue is so big and touches a lot of different genres means that pretty much anyone would have been able to fit under them. After all the cure are 'Emo' (according to so many who passed judgement last year) and so are paramour 'emo' by those same standards.

The original point was made to a lineup prediction that had bloc party playing below sabbath on a day with other heavier bands deftones, billy talent, serj tankian . They looked out of place.

How great it would be is completely irrelevant, personally I'd have them headlining festivals but that doesn't mean shit.

They weren't big enough to sub last time despite people asking/begging for them for years, what you're saying is the fact that they put in a great performance will outweigh the fact that it'll be three years later and they've haven't really done anything to get any significant new fans to replace their old fans who will have drifted away? I'd have to disagree with that. Their performance no doubt got them the sub slot at Soni the following year but those things are easily forgotten, NIN were great subs in 07 but won't get bumped up as the fact that they aren't as relevant any more will play on the organiser's minds.

Like Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Offspring. etc. they will continue to be a third-spot band as they have a big if ageing following, enough cred to still appear in NME and as they're from the US are rarely around, but without recent mainstream exposure are unlikely to get bumped up.

I hope I'm wrong though.

Not much has been made of the effect of The Killers headlining TITP. The damage is probably either:

  • Rihanna headlines T and V. Mumfords headline T and R+L.

  • Mumfords headline T and V. Biffy sub T and headline R+L.

  • Mumfords headline T and V. The Prodigy play R1/NME stage at T, headline R+L.

  • Sharing headliners doesn't happen in 2013.

Pick one!

    • I agree on WA taking a year off in 2027. But if they got the call from R&L could see them having a similar August to what Fontaines are doing now. A few random shows + 2/3 other festivals. The festival/LN does seem to love them as well so there is a chance they take a punt.   I did see about Rodrigo potentially doing a stadium in Poland but no clue if that would be 2027 or 2028, I just can't see her at the Fest at all, seems too big in current climate.   If I were to guess the headliners next year I'd go with Fred Again/Foos/Capaldi/Olivia Dean/Biffy or Wolf Alice/Some Rapper, Tems?
    • Ulitimately the “Top 6” or top 2 on a day by day basis work as a collective   You could easily have Foo Fighters and someone else much weaker on a single day   As long as they add up to 3, whether they’re a 2 and 1 or both 1.5s it doesn’t really matter   The Florence- Chase and status day is basically a 1.5 and 1, hence it selling the weakest
    • Pretty stupid, none of them got into mainland Spain, most are back in Morocco.
