The Fourth Headliner

So we're at the time of year where this board resembles a list of band names with will they play.

nOw, nowt wrong with that, after all it's Speculation Season, not quite Excitement Season yet.

So with the success of Wooderson's headliner threads I saw a gap in the market for a bit of discussion. And I remembered a theory I had concocted.

So cast yourselves back to 2009 and all the speculation of the "FOURTH HEADLINER!!!!!!!" which was of course ultimately a disappointment that didn't happen.

BUT WHO WAS IT?!

Well I have my thoughts.

The Killers.

Rationale -

- They played the Friday at HRC, which both Neil Young and The Boss played following their Glasto slots

-They've always spoken about how disappointed they were by the sound problems on their 2007 headline slot. Didn't one of them say it was "probably the only chance we'll get to headline"

-They're big Bruuuuuuuuuuuuce fans so would've loved playing under him

So that was my thoughts - NOW SPECULATE RAMPANTLY, and maybe Neil will finally spill the beans ;)

yep.

Cue 100 pages of obscure guesses suffixed with "I couldn't possibly say"

To avoid those 100 pages, I'll say it (again) now - I will not say. :)

I've never teased anyone with this, I've always said I won't say. There's no reason to say either, after all "a certain band didn't play Glastonbury" is hardly a new thing, is it? :P

I wasn't asked to not say, but I don't know the ins and outs of it all, and I've always felt it's an unfair slur on that band for people to then perhaps think that band has let them down in some way when it was never (as far as I'm aware) anything which was 100% agreed to on both sides anyway, it was just something that might have happened and both sides hoped might be able to happen.

So hopefully you've got it now. I won't say. :)

i've been dying to know this too, have prodded a few times on here since early 09, but Neil sticks to his guns and never even acknowledges the prods. so, a great thread to start, even if the first response killed it immediately.

i always thought it was Coldplay. big fans of the Boss, but just couldn't work it out. Killers is a good guess too though.

The idea of it being Stevie has just popped into my head and the more I think about it the more it kind of makes sense.

From what I understand he was a relatively late addition to last years bill after The Stones pulled out so it would make sense that if he had to pull out the year before that Eavis would pick up the phone, tell him that he's just called to say I love you and would you like to headline the Sunday because a slots just become available.
