Biggest Crowd

Got some hefty goose pimples from the FLC vid, a gig I thoroughly enjoyed and that was the highlight.

My daughter and I were right on the path at the back of the pyramid field as scissor sisters were closing and that felt like the biggest crowd I'd personally seen (although as mentioned, REM in '99 was mammoth and widely reported as the largest audience ever at that point), with a large number of people leaving before muse (to be replaced, but it didn't feel like by as many to us).

Madness in '09 was pretty heaving for an afternoon slot, as I recall. It was so packed I stuck around to see what the draw was and was glad I did.

I was right at the back next to the ice cream van for Stevie, and the sea of people in front of me was just unbelievable. It didn't look like there was a single space free in the entire field, made the performance even more special. Going for a wizz felt like travelling to Mordor and back.

Im really suprised Stevie had the biggest crowd, I was there and right at the front and it didn't feel like there was that many people behind me, it was quite spacious at the front actually.

Tried to walk from John Peel to Accoustic along the top path past Snoop and will never forget the size of that daytime croud. The whole path was full. I've never seen anything quite so amazing. Loved it.

Stevie wonder was a major clusterf**k. Came after lcd soundsystem, took the hospitality shortcut, and had to walk all the way around the pyramid arena and through some campgrounds before getting to the very back of the field and finding a spot to squeeze intom should have just stayed for orbital.

I know some facts on this from covering Worthy FM

- There were more people watching the football together as a crowd last year than there were at the match itself.

- The levellers, iirc, still hold the Jazzworld/West Holts record for largest attendance

- The Wurzels currently hold the Avalon stage record for their performance there last year or year before last, forget which.

Pyramid and other stages tho, no idea.

we tried to walk round the snoop dogg crowd and just gave up cause it was so bloody massive. Couldn't believe the size of that

Snoop Dogg was rammed but from watching this vid it seems that most of the crowd were concentrated at the sides. I joined in on the side after watching Bombay Bicycle Club in JP & it took ages to get there, ended up under that sides the Star of David. The shots of the crowd from the stage look incredible.

Snoops rapping in this is diabolical but my favourite bit is the bored guitarist at 1:02

I don't think there's any argument it was Bowie on the Sunday in 2000, still the most perfect glastonbury moment at the end of my first Glasto. Someone said earlier there was 200k people there, ive heard various reports some of which say up to 400k people were on site on the sunday and surely at least half would have been on the pyramid field. Apparently it was the biggest gathering of people in one place in the UK in recorded history, amazing really

It's always really difficult to judge the size of a crowd from inside it because you can't get an objective view. Radiohead in 2003 seemed absolutely rammed but there were only about 36 people there apparently.

I do think that the crowd for U2 will break any post-fence records, mostly because it is one of those 'once in a lifetime' deals, they'll almost certainly not play festivals again and will need to change a lot of their show to accommodate the venue.

Simple truth is that there has never been a bigger crush at the Pyramid than there was before Jay-Z. Plenty wandered off so it was probably not the biggest consistent crowd, but at the beginning it was the biggest, easily, and plenty stayed too.

Sunday acts always seem like a bigger crowd, possibly due to the 1000's of locals that get to pile in that day.

Obviously U2 will be pull in a large percentage of this years crowd but it will never be as bad as the 'over the fence' days. I shudder to think at how many people were there in those times.

Biggest crowds for me personally seemed to be Stevie, Scissor Sisters, Rolf in 2002, Macca, Blur in 09, Wilson in 05

I thought the (semi) official biggest was Rolf 2002, with the unofficial biggest Travis in 2000 (yes, more than Bowie bizarrely). I remember getting to the corner of the main drag around from the meeting point bar (when it was where it was in 2000) and just seeing a solid mass of people all the way to the pyramid - reports suggested something daft like 250,000+ crammed into the pyramid field after the fences came down. Don't think there were quite as many for Bowie, I managed to at least get to the pyramid field to see him (not that I was bothered to miss Travis, had a very pleasant night in the real ale bar instead). Seem to remember Carter USM pulling a pretty huge crowd on the Other Stage in the early/mid 90s?

I was in front of the separator barrier for Stevie, and there was absolutely bucketloads of space, enough to turn fully round 360 degrees without touching anyone- someone got on a guys shoulders in front of me and he offered to let me stand in front of him!

Ah right, funny thing is we were roughly in the same place for Muse and couldn't budge.
