Why does it matter? It tastes lovely and makes me drunk, which is generally what I'm looking for in an alcoholic beverage, not whether it's playing within the 'rules' of 'real' cider.

I recall about 5 or 6 years ago, when one of those continental markets came to Lincoln, there was the (before Wetherspoons bought it all up), introduction to Kopparberg stall.

These days I steer as clear as possible from this (for me) undrinkable sham of a beverage but the 7.5% Forest Fruit flavoured version of the drink they were selling on the stall was the cheekiest Vimto I had ever tasted. Tis and was a damn shame they then only released it as the piss poor alcopop 4% version.

Whilst I know that real cider has up to 3 times as many calories per pint, no more than 3 pints can and often does ruin you. But we all know at the big G and many other festies, we can all polish off an awful lots of cans of Wrongbow in a day! And so, I would much rather be drinking extra fattening but far better tasting pressed alcoholic apple juice than fizzy half as strong alcoholic fizzy water and cordial.

Still gutted about the Addlestones though. I had an end of barrel somewhat dodgy pint that was all cloudy which had me thinking it must be vaguely near the real thing. Hohum.

And as for CAMRA bods being a bit snobby, someone has to do the job. Without the good men and women of CAMRA making a decent song and dance about some of the nation's most treasured drinks and helping keep stories about proper ale in the press (not to mention the support with the resurgence in micro-brewing), this country would/could be totally lager ridden with little other choice.

I am proud to pontificate and wax lyrical about and not to mention search out decent ale and especially quality cider and perry. Nom.

THE bus sells pretty tasty cider although I do have to say the H&S wasnt anywhere near as good as in past years in 2010. There was definitly something lacking (other than an extra shot of Apple Brandy!)

Toffee Apple? Something like that. I thought it was very naff that they don't even pre-flavour the stuff anymore and just squirt a couple of splashes of whichever 'flavoured concentrate' you have asked for into the top of the pint. Cynical almost? I think there will be a Brother's backlash. Let's have (various) Ales on Holts!

It's no secret that Brothers is essentially an Alcopop. I'll drink it sometimes, it's alright. But it's kind of annoying when people are snobby while drinking Brothers saying it's the real thing etc, when they don't know the truth.

I've got a demi-john of home-grown cider bubbling away in the Garage, hope it's good!

I think you can still get the 'normal' Ayingerbrau lager or Weiss Bier but the daddy was D Pils

It's a little because of the hero worship of this drink which is nothing like what it actually used to be like and these days is pretty rank and very chemical and not very cidery at all. Some people do get a bit bored of the endless banging on about how much of an elixir it is when there are so many real and proper and amazing ciders out there that will do things to you and effect you in ways the Brothers of today just cant and doesnt get close to. Its not about snobbery though, merely just folkd who do appreciate proper zoider do get narked with bods who bang on about this so called wonder drink. Its marketing, pure and simple. A long held myth, legend, tradition. Word of mouth that became a massive enterprise for those lucky men at Brothers. And its worked hasnt it? Thousands love it, thousands choose not to drink the stuff.

Brothers did I believe once start life as a proper cider though. It was cloudy, went by the suitable name of Grog, it was like drinking pure battery acid and it was 8.5% proof not that long ago (early 21st century). f**ked you sideways and you couldnt use your legs after just half a pint it was that strong! Another reason WHY older chaps and chapesses often steer clear of the new fangled fruit beverage.
