SOmething about the Van Der Vaart transfer just doesn't add up. The supposed drop of £10m in price in the space of 2 days just doesn't make sense. I'm sure more will come out eventually. The other thing is that yes he's a cracking player, but Spurs already have similar players.

Still at least it gives their fans something to be excited about. Almost as exciting as the thought of seeing Almunia remain our number 1

the deal still isn't confirmed, so I can only guess there's some begging going on - after all, it doesn't take much to check whether a deal was done before the deadline or not.

Did Spurs have a similar thing happen too in a recent(ish) window? I can remember another deal taking a while to be confirmed, and my memory is suggesting that was Spurs too. Am i right, or was it another club?

This bit looks a bit suspect tho, looks like I was right saying there was some begging going on.

They clearly didn't make the deadline then, and while the Prem might have investigated, I very much doubt that what they've been shown for the "technical problem" is stuff that isn't difficult to fake as it's likely to be computer-based.

Real's statement said: "It is absolutely false that Real Madrid received a 21m euro (£18m) offer from Bayern Munich for Van der Vaart.

"In fact, the German team never showed an interest to sign the player, so the allegations made in England have greatly surprised us."

and those words from Real also give the whole thing a bit of a wiff.

here's a thought. the transfer window is open for a whole month. why not do your business in the first week, meaning more time to bed in and have more use of the player. just a thought like...

Its TWO months actually, but yeah its always last minute deals cus clubs appear to lower prices to finance other deals, doesn't seem too much of that happening though yesterday

it's 3 months in the summer isn't it?

In place of Carson I'd pick Loach. A 3rd choice keeper is only going to play if the other two are suddenly injured (unlikely outside a tournament) so why pick someone who's already failed?

In place of Upson and Carrick I'd choose Huddlestone and Rodwell. They could even call up Muamba.

In place of Wright-Phillips I'd choose Lennon (who I think is a fair better player) or Wilshere.

In place of Cole I'd choose either Carroll or Moses - give one of them a chance to be in the squad and learn.

If he does well for Newcastle (he impressed me at Everton) I'd think about calling Gosling up for a future squad too.

I have never agreed with the way england run the u21 team. It seems the attitude is get the best players available find a formation that works and try and win as many games as possible. Someone is judged as a succesfull u21 manager if they do well in tournaments. This is completely wrong, an u21 manager should be judged on how many players from their team progress to the senior squad. The u21 team needs to build around players who play in a position the national side is weak and if none are available try to convert players to that position. I just dont think england u21 have enough long term planning.

but how do you convert say a left back into a centre half? or a centre midfielder into a winger in such little time? think the only way a player can be converted is through every day training and regular games for their clubs.

Gary speed used to play left back for wales and did a really solid job. Im not saying he learned the trade in the u21 but he didnt learn it playing for his club. My point is that if you are really strong in one position in the national side then you may have a player coming through the u21 ranks who is very good but wont break through, however maybe they can do a job in another position and the u21 squad is a good time to experiment.

I heard didi hamann once talking a lot of sense. He basically said that in england players were too quick to use playing out of position as an excuse and in germany they were so depserate to play that they would play anywhere and learn to make the most of that position. With a lot of british players you get the impression when they are tried somewhere else they go into the match thinking negatively from the start. I think british players should be more adaptable. People moan about the likes of gerrard and rooney playing out of position but its not like the manager is asking them to play centre back.

I can see wales campaign being just as bad as the recent ones. John Toshack has zero man management skills. I would probably have chosen england ahead of all the top seeds and it is a group full of low scoring teams. However we score less than anyone and can see a bottom place finish.
