could anyone give me some ifno on Southside? I usually like a festival with a variety of things to do -- dance tent, smaller bars, discos etc -- and I'm wondering if Southside has much of this.... Also curious about the atmosphere on the camp site etc and whether people are friendly...

 

I went to Hurricane way back in 2009 but, while it was a very long time ago and I can't remember too much, if memory serves me right, there wasn't much going on aside from the bands. I realise things may be very different now though...

 

I did read some reviews on TripAdvisor which didn't exactly shine a great light on the festival... They were mainly centred around poor organisation, bad traffic and awful weather, none of which the festival did much to negate. So is this something I can expect, or like most things, are the reviews being written by the few who had the worst experiences?

Ok, I've been 20x so I feel like I can answer your Questions... 🙂 The Festival is on a German base, a lot of bands from Germany and in the dance tents you will hear a lot of German Sound. There are dance tents, but not that much. The weather tends to be not that great and in the nights it can get really cold, since the Festival ground is on a higher Plateau (airport). Getting there or leaving by car can get difficult if it was raining a lot, your car stands on a meadow ground. But there have been years when it was very sunny as well. Too much heat in June can cause a problem because of the thunderstorms you get afterwards...

People are very nice and the atmosphere is great, otherwise I wouldn't have been there 20x... From the station of Tuttlingen you can get a free Shuttle Bus. Or go there by car. If you like the line up, then you do no wrong if you try it out! 🙂

thanks mate... Sound decent. I would be travelling from the UK so we won;t be driving, we'd be coming via plane...

 

It's a toss up between this and Rock for People in Czech Republic... undecided as of yet.

 

What are the options for camping? Do they do glamping, pre-pitched tents, luxury camping etc?

Yes they have these camping options... Never made this though...

I just checked the prices for glamping... had to Google trnalate because the page won't auto-translate... 1,300 euros for 3 person pre-pictehd tent! lol No thanks!!! hahahaha

I went to Hurricane last year and attend RFP every year. It's RFP for me.

 

I am not a fan of those festivals, where the audience spends a lot of time in the camp partying and then they go to see some popular German acts and the headliner and go back to drinking in the camp... but I get it, there is nothing to do in the area. Also you will probably walk a lot.

 

RFP, people are coming early (11 AM) to see the bands and leaving the park when it closes at 3 AM, the stages are quite close and bands are not clashing that much. Prices for food and drinks are cheaper... it's also a mini beer festival with... maybe 100 kind of beers? There is also a stage for theater, stand up comedy, performances etc. parties

Hurricane sounds like Reading where it's just a pathway to a festival rather than going to enjoy a day of bands.

 

RFP is very cheap naturally, it's a shame my interest kinda ends at the two headliners and two of the undercard bands, might even be one. I literally don't have the head space right now to invest time in getting to know new bands either.

It's not bad but I wouldn't jump form England to it. I guess that's the same as a German person though jumping over here for something. To be honest I'd be surprised price wise if many Europeans would jump over here for many of our festivals except for Glastonbury as they get a lot of them all cheaper.

 

I wouldn't see a reason for Hurricane to hold Weezer back if it was them.

Yeah they've been announced at a couple of other festivals recently so you'd have thought their name would've broken cover.

Just realised because Weezer are doing Pinkpop and Green Day aren't as they are doing Southside then is why Weezer aren't playing it.

Well he's not a headliner at Hurricane. Different markets and I get no other festival is getting LP, Olivia and Green Day but Fender could have easily just been a sub.

Another festival sort of limping over the line, don't know what time it's getting announced officially but Rise Against and Jan Bohmermann are the missing headliners.

Yeah, I did have it on my radar, there was just nothing much added in this batch that made me fully commit to spending a bit more on my Euro fest trip this year and adding this to my trip to Rock for People

The Coachella stuff, I understand that festivals or promoters might be uncomfortable with giving them that platform but it's nothing new from them they've been doing this for a while at all of their shows, they did it at the first weekend of Coachella, and they were allowed back for weekend 2!
