There's an issue here in that the polls were not wrong last time. It was recognised before the election night that a Trump victory was in the margin of error for the polls: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/trump-is-just-a-normal-polling-error-behind-clinton/

With a 3.3% margin predicted in the popular vote between Clinton and Trump and a 2.1% margin in reality.

The gap between Trump and Biden is currently 8.3%: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/president-general/national/ . That is a much larger gap. If the polls are incorrect by the average 2% suggested it is still a significant lead for Biden. Strengthening his base he might be, but COVID has decimated his election hopes. You can't whitewash 150,000 people dying. People aren't falling for it; 2020 is not 2016.

plus all those people out of work.

As one of the sensible ones who has been well ahead of the curve on the mask chat, how do you reconcile this with your planned trip?

Non essential travel needs to stop, especially with the lack of proper quarantine and testing of  arrivals.

I’m holding off at the moment due to increasing numbers in Europe. Germany and Italy are looking at schemes where all arrivals are tested and I’m likely to do a voluntary 2 weeks quarantine on return.

Thats if I do go anywhere, I don’t have anything booked.

I was more referencing that I don’t think a festival should be going ahead in the current situation, could be a hotspot location for an outbreak, and that’s not fair on locals or the country the people are returning to.

I know you are right, non essential travel is what is causing cases to increase, but if there is no non essential travel then pretty much all airlines and train companies etc would go completely bust. I guess it’s a difficult one to balance.

Ive been wearing a mask since the start, barely seen any friends and family and not gone to a pub or restaurant since they reopened. I’m acting as cautiously as I can, and I’m following the guidelines. I would argue that a mass gathering of 30,000 should not be allowed within those guidelines. I personally think going somewhere on my own and keeping myself to myself is a much lower risk scenario.

+846 cases today, looks like it slowly rising along with the rest of Europe. ☹️

Edit: just checked on the gov website, apparently deaths data isn’t available today, anyone know why?

I wish I could upvote more than once.  The reason people don't believe the polls is because they don't understand statistics.

Over the last couple of weeks the number of positive tests in NI have increased but hospital numbers are down to just 4 now which is great news.

No deaths since July 12th either, although sadly 2 of the 4 in hospital at the minute are in ICU so that may change.

I can't find the data to support but I'm becoming more convinced that increasing infections (although still not significant) are not manifesting in hospital admissions or deaths as the average age of the infected person is reducing, and there is less chance of requiring treatment.  There is clearly an issue in Europe with increasing rates being due to younger people continuing to socialise and this would be a natural result of that.  Perfectly likely we are beginning to see the same across UK.

Rare positive post from me - https://metro.co.uk/2020/07/29/huge-queue-tests-outbreak-pub-where-200-crowded-beer-garden-13055175/?ito=amp-more-item-2

This is good stuff- shows containment systems and track and trace are getting better. May also be good in that some might test positive with little to no symptoms. Could be interesting to see the outcomes of this

Obviously completely reliant on them actually self isolating if they test positive...

Anyway, is anyone going to watch Panorama on Care Homes this evening?

Probably watch it at some point...maybe not tonight. Don't think there will be any surprises..old people were sent back to care homes from hospitals without being tested, helped prevent the NHS from being overwhelmed...and  they're old anyway so fuckem.

You are right, I’ll probably watch as I’m an idiot and like to be annoyed it seems.

Worth nothing that Belgium had +673 cases today, and their population is 1/6 of ours, so that would equate to 3600 cases in this country.

Feel like quarantine on Belgium could be introduced within the next few days.

According to worldometer, Spain saw +2789 cases today, but I believe that covers all pillars, including antibody tests. In comparison, france saw +1377 cases. Does france only include hospitalised cases, or does the figure also include community transmission?

Did you see Luxembourg is now on the quarantine list as well?
