Convincing friends to attend

Have told mates here how good it is and you get the usual 'yeah I'm definitely going next year' response. TBH I just leave them to it. Needless to say it was exact same crew went this year with me as last. The 'definitely next year' brigade didn't bother registering even. My other mates know what is required if they want to go, they are all grown-ups so I'm not going to hold their hand to get a ticket, hard enough getting my own and for our regular group who actually bother going through the pain and anguish of T-Day

Like others have said you need to just get one friend to go at first. When they come back as completely obsessed as you then others will realise that the place is that magic.

Me and the wife took a newbie this year, was supposed to take two of our friends but one backed out on both ticket and resale day and then acted like he wasn't fussed. Now that's there's three of us who won't shut up about glasto he's taking the plunge himself next year to see what the fuss is about.

Just make sure you pick the right friends though, we had another couple join us on the Thursday and tbh they found it hard work and in all honesty were right grumpy bastards at times, to the point were they left after dolly on the Sunday to go to a hotel. Plus it felt like they were looking down their noses most of the time in regards to how us three were able to let ourselves go and enjoy ourselves, maybe they're just past it !

Anyone that needs persuading to go to Glastonbury clearly doesn't get it and shouldn't be there. It's not as if there isn't enough media coverage nowadays to give them a pretty good idea of what to expect (and by media I mostly mean the BBC; some of the newspaper coverage is just bollocks, exaggerating the amount of mud etc).

The media doesn't even slightly cover it. I have no problem trying to convince one or two friends to come with me next year. I'd hate to be somebody who wants to keep something I like all for myself. The odds are stacked against everyone who tries for a ticket anyway.

Ugh... anyone who says "definitely" usually means that they definitely-won't do the tiung you're talking about.

"We should go for drinks some time!"

"Definitely!"

I managed to convince two of my friends to come for the first time this year (my sixth). One of them absolutely loved it and wants to come every year, the other was a right miserable tosser the whole weekend and moaned about EVERYTHING. "Oh its too wet, oh its too muddy, oh now the suns out its too hot its making me tired, oh the foods too expensive etc etc". He was very lucky he didn't have a broken nose by the end of it!

If you are trying to convince friends, make sure you are confident that they won't be like that! Very very annoying. And because it was his first time he wouldn't leave my side for pretty much the whole festival because "well I don't know where I am going do I I will just stay with you". So there was no escape!

in the end my friend never went, i firmly believe he is kicking himself and it was just me, and the missus and i very much doubt she would of went if i was!

I'd say the BBC coverage gets worse every year. The wall to wall coverage of Radio 1 darlings and backstage acoustic sets is hardly what makes Glastonbury what it is. Dread to think people use that as a deciding factor on whether to go or not!

You need to actually be there to "get it" - no one is born with an understanding of Glastonbury. Apart from those who were taken unwillingly by their parents, everyone was persuaded to go the first time they went - some just take a bit more persuading than others.

How did you find out about the festival? Where did the desire to go come from?

I decided I wanted to go this year and didn't need any persuading, my other half works it most years and have heard about it from other people. Have always been aware of it being an amazing festival.

And no it wasn't the BBC coverage that drew me cos to be honest I never watch it as I don't really watch concerts on the TV. Its just not the same as being there and soulless.

p.s, I know that question wasn't directed at me.

Just to add, if you have to convince people to attend you are asking the wrong friends.

Was into Hawkwind, Gong, Pink Fairies and the like who obviously played the festivals. Like what the festival scene was about, hung about with the "Peace Convoy", lots of squat parties Was a bit young to go to Stonehenge. So got to 16, Glastonbury not far away, bands that I was into (chance to see Aswad and Black Uhuru as well )so me and me mates decided to go (that was 1982)

It was a friend who convinced me to go to the festival way way back. He'd been trying for a number of years but hadn't got anywhere. As I wasn't really into bands etc I felt a bit reluctant to go. Fair play to him because he kept on persisting that I go. Eventually I gave in because I thought it would be a good piss up at least. Little did I know what a treat layed in store for me. The place blew me away. I think it helped that my first few Glastonbury's were blessed with good weather. If I had first gone in a year like 2007 I don't think I would ever had returned.

You decided you wanted to go this year, but have resisted in the past? Would this not put you in the "wrong friends" category?

My point is that you don't suddenly wake up one morning and think "I'm going to go to Glastonbury" without hearing something about it from somewhere. I assume it's safe to say that you became aware it was an amazing festival at some point? Either by your other half or mates etc

I have a couple of mates who it took a couple of years to convince. Like the OP, I knew they'd love it if they actually gave it a go. They did, and they did - as it appears do you. This year was their 4th or 5th time I think and they've thanked me in the past for convincing them to come.

Nope, just never got round to it for one reason or another and nobody was convincing me to go. This year thought sod waiting and friends letting me down, I'll go by myself so that's what I did.

I think you'd have to living in a cave to not be aware of Glastonbury to be honest.

This year it was my other half who convinced me to go by myself and to join this forum and I'd be grand. Best advice ever.

That's the same with most things surely

Yes. However it's been implied that if you have to say more than just the word "Glastonbury" to one of your friends to convince them to go then they're either crap friends or they're not worthy of going. People hear about Glastonbury in all sorts of different ways from good old fashioned word of mouth to the increased media coverage in recent years. It's all a form of persuasion.

That fact that some people think that they have a greater right to a ticket than others or that those that need a bit of convincing aren't welcome is just bollocks.

So it was a good thing that you were convinced to go. Good job they didn't give up on you.

Nope, I wanted to go, he said go for it. He was hardly trying to convince me. Jaysus.

He convinced me I would be ok going solo.

    • 👍 plus they brought their own screens 📺 either side of the stage.
    • Production was the only thing that could even explain why she would back out. Like they had sorted out the financials and she was fine with it and then a production meeting happened. It all fell apart. It was very clear that she was not going to compromise her show one bit and then that show in Brazil pretty much confirmed it. There was like one element they couldnt pull off outdoors, but it was negligible since the rest was a carbon copy of the tour she had been on. Glasto is not willing to make any bold changes on the Pyramid stage so then theyre kinda stuck in terms of what some acts want/demand. I think the easiest solution to that is putting her on Friday. You deal with the changes for one night and then re configure for the rest of the weekend. In 24 they were fortunate to have had Dua and Coldplay on Fri and Sat so they could both use the b stage. But I think it was removed for Sunday?     I saw a random rag article earlier that said Olivia Dean turned down Glasto BECAUSE her ex ( not even confirmed dating ) Harry Styles was playing the fest. hahahaha
    • No argument that he’s bigger than ever, I just have no enthusiasm for it.
    • Keep in mind those crowds were full of teenagers. Glasto aint full of teenagers. Theres no way she could demand headline and get it because they got other acts to give the slot to who deserve it with a bigger catalog. Reading/Leeds would headline her cause its still LN.  If the fest was struggling its Other headline. But a 3rd down Pyramid is likely the landing spot. Itll go down like the Camila Cabello performance pretty much.
