Thursday night does look pretty brutal. A site-trasher.

remember they only showed blue colours in the rainfall on countryfile. It turns green then yellow then red for serious rainfall on BBC stuff

There's sod all predicted until then so the ground will have every chance to soak plenty of it up before full chaos Friday. Thursday less going on, folk will be more likely to stay in and not churn it too much

Dude if they happened 4 times in the last 17 years I think its unlikely they're all 1/1000 year events. More like 1/5

Selective denominators are not a good predictor, the definition of 'climate' is a 30 year average, so on those circumstances taking 30 years of climate data for the whole of the summer period they are relatively rare events.

I hear a lot about 97, 05 and 07 but not much about 98.

Can someone give me an overview?

98 was soul destroying after 97. I distinctly remember sitting in our (very small) tent with a friend, listening to the rain lashing down, and really wondering if I could do it all over again. We really had to psyche ourselves up to leave the tent. We did though. It was bad, but not as bad as 97, if I remember rightly.

Was actually wetter than 97 and so easier to get about. Lots of standing water in the Pyramid field + dance tent due to the lack of drainage in those days. More water hanging around than any of the other big wet ones, at least during the main part of the festival. Monday 07 or Friday 05 might had deeper pools, but I doubt it.

I think it was fairly cold. I had the sniffles that year, so spent a lot of time in my tent. I think it rained during the headliners, which I listened to from said tent.

So, very much like 97, but as long as you had wellies, better due to reduced ground viscosity!

Jesus! I've become obsessed with the weather again- I've got work tomorrow! I have to get back into work mode!

Should we though? The next GFS run will be out in a few hours....

I swear this shit has replaced the frantic attempts to guess the line up now they announce it all so early.

Thursday - constant, drizzling rain. Muddy

Friday - constant, drizzling rain until about 6pm, when it seemed like the world ended for fifteen minutes the rain was so mental. 05 esque flooding in Pennards. Serious discussion about whether festival could continue IIRC

Sat / Sun - sun and clouds, odd shower, site as you would expect

Friday was pretty much the hardest day I've ever done at Glastonbury.

Are you sure? Thursday was the only day it rained last year and I didn't see anyone going back to their tents to try and preserve the ground. Everyone was getting right involved as they will be if it rains this week.

haha not so much

But there's still fewer people around on Thursday evening than Friday to start with even with the earlier arrivals these days I still find it a bit of a jolt

I went back to my tent for a nap after spending all afternoon huddling in the bar next to the cider bus getting absolutely twatted. I woke up at about 8pm with a raging hangover. Let me tell you, a hangover in the evening is a million times worse than in the morning!

    • A mixed first day for us. First of all, we were honestly quite shocked that there was no security check at all at the VIP entrance around 7:30 PM. No bag check, nothing. I’ve attended Primavera many times over the years and this felt surprisingly lax for an event of this size. Did anyone else experience the same?   Another disappointment was the communication regarding the weather situation. Primavera has some of the best sound systems and speaker setups in the festival world, yet somehow they were not able to make a single clear announcement explaining what was happening. Instead, people were expected to read tiny messages on screens in Mordor while thousands were left wondering what was going on. A simple and direct audio announcement would have gone a long way.   On a lighter note, this guy absolutely made my day. Sitting right in front of the Estrella Damm terrace, wearing nothing but a long-sleeve shirt, jeans and a pair of Converse All Stars, he remained completely unbothered by the rain. While everyone else was looking for shelter, he sat there wearing sunglasses, calmly watching the crowd as if he was watching a movie.   Absolute main character energy!
    • I think my party got pretty lucky last night, at least compared to some of the horror stories over on Reddit. I was very impressed with Father John Misty in particular.   Perhaps my view would be different if I were a big Massive Attack fan or whatever, but right now my feeling is that if it's not safe for the shows to go ahead... then it's not safe for the shows to go ahead. I'd much rather they were cautious than roll the dice when it comes to something like that.    Here's hoping everyone has a better day today.
    • It was awful during Father John Misty and I was close to the front. People just shouting and laughing their f-ing heads off about nothing in particular and being louder than the bloody stage.
    • Other things I noted yesterday, away from the obvious…   Positives: - an extra water point towards the back left of the main stages has appeared, which I believe is new for this year (and was much needed) - handing out free ponchos was a good touch  - caroline were fantastic. I’d never been in the Auditori Rockdelux before, it’s a wonderful venue and a great venue if you fancy a more chilled out environment  Negatives: - the talkers. I know it’s always bad here (and most festivals nowadays) but f**k me people wouldn’t shut up yesterday. I wonder if it was partly as a result of people being at artists they had little interest in (due to rain limiting their options), although it wasn’t great during blood orange. We’ll be making an effort to get a spot nearer the front for anyone we particularly care about over the weekend  - not enough staff around (and the ones that are there are largely useless). Most other festivals have them everywhere and are happy to help
