Off the top of my head I'd say venom, Judas Priest Motörhead were all going before Metallica and probably influenced their 'thrash' sound

Judas Priest are heavy metal , Motörhead did play fast for example the song overkill is pretty thrashy but Lemmy is adamant Motörhead are rock and roll ( we are Motörhead and we play rock and roll )

Are Metallica not one of the "Big Four" who are said to have "invented" trash metal?

I know fuck all on this but I do recall this being said to me before.......the others being Slayer, Anthrax and Iron Maiden?

'The Big Four' are Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. They are certainly the most successful examples of thrash metal (when they made thrash metal), took it to the masses and are the most recognisable to then general public but as with all such things they didn't 'invent' it.

Aye, tbf they helped the genre cross into the mainstream, but not inventors.

Anyhow who gives a fuck about semantics... Is prince playing/ any good?

so is there not an argument for it being the big 3 then??

(I know nothing of this as is probably obvious).

Megadeth were still a pretty successful thrash band. as was stated before - those bands didn't invent thrash. they were just the biggest thrash bands who managed to break through

You say "invented" but back in the day the belief was that they couldn't play better than that.

They caused a massive schism in metal fans.

That was just the way I remember someone saying it to me hence the "" marks. From what I have just read it seems the term Trash Metal began to be used at the time the "Big Four" started making that style popular, but it had existed for up to 10 year prior, but was not categorized as such. So I think that is were the confusion lies within such statements.

Anyway as I said I know fuck all about this and only ever had a handful of trash metal cassettes when I was about 10 and that phase in my music upbringing lasted probably about a weekend! ;)

Well, I'd say that Soni have just about confirmed that Metallica are playing Glasto. :D

All that remains is whether they'll be headlining.

Why? Because Dream Theatre are playing?

They're going to replace Metallica at Soni?

    • Interesting to read. It's mostly why we stopped going a few years back even though it's the nearest big festival to home. The post-exams timing and location makes it a rites of passage first festival for people in a big area. Understandably that leads to a bit of giddiness. Think lineup would need to be a lot more my cup of tea to be enticed back. Friends who are there are having a good time tho and no rain is a good thing for up there.
    • I honestly didn't know it had, I still thought it was where the view overlooked the lake and view.   I think my decision not to attend this year at least was justified. Biffy was the big draw but after Finsbury I knew they wouldn't play what I want to hear again and well work also got in the way. Believed interesting to hear if Libertines were any good as they were also a pull but Sunday did nothing for me really with all my acts on Friday and Saturday.

    • I hate tradmill running with a passion lol. Yeah the 1km reps are the one along with hill reps. That's what I did last time.  It's very a very hot summer and job circumstances to stay at the consistent level I was for the marathon earlier in the year. I've got a full set of the main distance new PBs this year. 10k isn't a problem most days but even today I went out deciding just over 5 mile was enough between recovery cruise and steady.
