Personally I think Black Sabbath would make a far better booking than Metallica but as someone who has criticised the festival for years for their indifference to one of the biggest genres in music, I would take Metallica with open arms.

Fairly sure Emily or Michael themselves said that was the case.

Michael in saying something to hype up the media shocker. Dont forget the 3 headliners this year are the 3 biggest acts in the world to have never played the festival.

An agreement will have been in place for weeks, there is no way it was only sorted a day before the line up was released.

I guess Elbow are the last resort headliner for Glasto if they really have no Sat headliner.

If it was Metallica, i imagine they would be announced well after the ticket resale for glasto has gone and it's impossible to get more ticket for it, so as not to hinder Sonisphere sales. The Sonisphere/Glasto corssover would be minimal crowd wise: i doubt there will be many people going to both regardless of Metallica playing..

I don't know, I mean without trying to tar all Sonisphere goers with the same brush here, why would a Metallica fan choose to go to Glastonbury over a Sonisphere, when they get to pick the setlist themselves? For me, that screams an amazing occasion, i'd imagine the number would be minimal, unless of course, the sole reason for them going to Sonisphere is for Metallica, which would be amazing really, because the lineup is bloody great!

But obviously, that would be on the mind of Sonisphere bosses, but did we not establish (by 'we' i mean Neil, and a few clever people), that their UK 'exclusive' was infact, just the 'By Request' part?

Either way, no elbow

That could be it! Soni get the 'By Request' part, they control the set chose the songs they want to hear, they come to glastonbury and just blast out the hits (tbh looking at the voting there isn't that much difference) pull out the big guns, bring the beach balls, the lazers and go wild...

most hardcore fans will be going to Soni, leaving glastonbury for the usual mix of casusal people who enjoy lots of different acts and are not afraid to see something a bit different, out of their comfort zone and just roll with it

First of all, you've conjoined two separate statements there, which both look likely to be true. Michael referred to three headliners who had never headlined before, and if efests are right, its believed he was referring to Elbow, Depeche Mode and Fleetwood Mac who were pencilled in as headliners at the time. Second of all, I believe the quote was "five of the biggest acts in the world are playing", which at one stage, taking into consideration Dolly, Eagles, Prince, Metallica and Fleetwood, is quite possible to have been what Glastonbury believed at the time.

Secondly, why would Glastonbury need any hype? The festival had sold out for months, they'd booked one of the biggest acts in the world ever ans were guaranteed wall to wall coverage from that alone. In addition, what type of hype does it give Glastonbury to say something like that?

It's massively clear throughout time that Michael has very little control over what he says, hence why he's been reigned in by Emily.

I believe Glastonbury did have a plan for months, but it was the backup plan ala Prince /Kasabian this year, Beyonce/Prince before that.

completely wrong.

When Eavis made the statement about 3 headliners who've not *PLAYED* before, he also said about them being some of the biggest acts in the world. Neither part of that statement fit those three bands.

The bands that efests named were 3 that I know Michael had spoken to about headlining in 2014 more around 6 months before the 2013 fest. Things always tend to change for whatever reasons that far away from the festival, and it was pretty clear they'd changed at the point Michael made that statement.

I can tell you've never spoken with Michael.

My mistake I'm a massive twat. Apologies to you on that Englishdragon.

I have had several conversations with Michael on varying topics due to work connections, and am surprised at how much he's said though, Efests. Thankfully he's not James Bond, although the shorts might have given that away.

My point was Michael has been known to say things to the media that have ended up being completely untrue.

Like you say Glastonbury doesn't need the hype but they do continue to say these things which is why I don't believe for one second that they don't have a Saturday headliner booked (I think all 3 headliners are signed and sealed along with all the main stages acts at this point) just as I dont think The Stones signed up on the same day the line up got released.

All the main stage acts signed and sealed, I doubt it very much. The most that could be said is most acts will have been involved in discussions.

That's a different thing to saying things which are untrue, tho.

Things change. I've yet to hear of any instance where things Michael has said which later turn out to be happen have been false at the time they've been said.

It might not be the normal manner of PR - in fact it's not, because PR is simply another way of saying 'bullshit' - but Glasto's success gets to show that it's a form of PR that works better than the 'approved' forms of PR. And all of that is achieved without ever considering a need a for PR.

Which is rather fantastic, in my view. :)

Yes please. Are you more certain today for any reason? Or do you just like tgis thread so much you're trying to keep it on the front page?

I've been suggesting the likelihood of it happening for a few days now, without knowing that Glasto don't have Prince (tho I was suspecting t5hat was the case). So the fact that I now know they don't have Prince does make me more certain about Metallica as main headliner.

(note: that's "more certain", not "I am certain". I'm saying I think the likelihood is greater).

I know that Metallica were initially approached about headlining the Pyramid. With them likely to be the biggest band on the bill that were not in a Pyramid headliner slot, it's blindingly obvious that attempts are likely to be made to fit them into that slot.

Don't worry Neil, I wouldn't manipulate anything you've said (apart from all the times I claimed ypu said Depeche Mode were the 4th headliner!)

On a serious note though, I once read an interview with ME and re roskilde he said having the second barrier in the crowd improved safety. Im often battered at Glastonbury, but I dont recall one of these on Other stage, so would seem unlikely for him to book them there on safety grounds?

Also, do you think metallica moving into pyramid slot is more likely that The Eagles? No love lost for them on this board, but huge band nonetheless...

    • Just watched Annie Lennox at Wilderness Festival as part of her global feminist The Circle initiative. She curated the 2 hour slot with special guests including Jessie Ware and then did  a 1/2 hour slot singing her and Eurythmics hits at the end. Her voice is amazing still and I am convinced she would do an amazing set on Sunday afternoon. She even wore a jacket with a sparkling CND symbol on the back! It’s a sign!!

    • Is it one of those bollocks things where ones is a festival and the other would be a show lol
    • Hello,   I have no idea what the answer is to your question, but wish you well in your quest for information.
    • Yes, I was asking about comedy, and also it seems odd that after bringing it back last year, the Seaside Stage seems to have gone again. Probably why Massaoke (basically a big karaoke sing-along) is now on the Castle Stage. But on all three days?! Does all seem a little desperate this year, though hopefully I will be proved wrong. Still think the Mary Wallopers fiasco has probably put a lot of artists off performing at Victorious, hence the reduction in stages and acts appearing... One of the best things about Victorious in the early days was its value for money compared to some of the other bigger festivals, but this certainly not the case anymore...
