The implication being what though - that you didn't spend enough effort or money on you appearance?

Mrs B insisted that middle-aged men do shop in Top Man so, a year or so ago, I ventured in to a branch - I think I was the only person in there who had passed through puberty. And do they make the sales assistants cum on each other to get that scruffy, sticky-up hair? Awful place.

there's no shortage of hipsters if you know where to look. Thomas St in Manchester on any given day. though amusingly, that part of town is now turning into a stag and hen-do nightmare full of out-of-towners of a weekend. i guess the hipsters will move on, probably down to where i live. i am always five minutes ahead of my time.

no a crowd has always been needed, it's not about exclusivity, it's just that modern crowds are rubbish.

Too selfconscious and worried what other people think.

THATS why modern hipsters are crap.

Watch bowie doing changes at glastonbury, or fun loving criminals in 1999, These modern day nobheads cant enjoy themselves like that!

I think they use 'product'

I remember asking a beautiful young Brazilian in the 70's how she spiked her hair (when it was a bit new), she said she used pussy juice.. a combination of her not perfect english, and my naivety in not knowing about lubricant left me with a very odd picture in my head.

I have just read this thread and I too had to go to google images.

It seems the common theme for me is that they all wear national health glasses and remind me of 'Wheres Wally'.Perhaps he's the poster boy.

Is the term Hipster derogatory like Chav or is it say like a Mod?

There must be a few hipsters on here who can give us some input.

Anyone?

Yes, chav is always derogatory, hipster is only derogatory some of the time. As for dressing in NHS specs and looking like...well, yes, but that's the ironic bit, it is very expensive to get the look right.

Hipsters thrive on being called hipsters. I'm looking forward to seeing leather jackets at the festival, it always makes me chuckle.

I did the very same thing a few years ago. I had to go upstairs to get to the mens section. Once there I realised my error and had a bit of a panic attack and couldn't get out fast enough. My error being that the clothes were not for me, and possibly that my interpretation of a mens section had been wildly off mark.

I may well bring a leather jacket, but I'm not a hipster (though I do like Animal Collective and I do read Pitchfork occasionally). Most of my casual jackets are leather, so I'm a bit stuck. I won't be wearing one in the heat of the day, only at night and only if cool enough; in all senses.

From what I gather, Hipster is synonymous with being 'pretentious' - you wear a pretentious style of clothing, you listen to pretentious music, you watch pretentious films, you live a pretentious lifestyle. Essentially, you're trying far too hard to be different or to be an individual. Hyper self-conscious. You will listen to Sharon Van Etten when everybody else listens to Laura Marling. You will watch La vie d'Adele rather than the new Star Trek film. Not down to preference or because you really want to; purely down to the fact that in your own mind, it makes you cool to be doing something that others aren't, and actively flaunting this lifestyle as if being condescending is a positive trait despite the fact that what you're being condescending about, ultimately you know nothing about.

    • A mixed first day for us. First of all, we were honestly quite shocked that there was no security check at all at the VIP entrance around 7:30 PM. No bag check, nothing. I’ve attended Primavera many times over the years and this felt surprisingly lax for an event of this size. Did anyone else experience the same?   Another disappointment was the communication regarding the weather situation. Primavera has some of the best sound systems and speaker setups in the festival world, yet somehow they were not able to make a single clear announcement explaining what was happening. Instead, people were expected to read tiny messages on screens in Mordor while thousands were left wondering what was going on. A simple and direct audio announcement would have gone a long way.   On a lighter note, this guy absolutely made my day. Sitting right in front of the Estrella Damm terrace, wearing nothing but a long-sleeve shirt, jeans and a pair of Converse All Stars, he remained completely unbothered by the rain. While everyone else was looking for shelter, he sat there wearing sunglasses, calmly watching the crowd as if he was watching a movie.   Absolute main character energy!
    • I think my party got pretty lucky last night, at least compared to some of the horror stories over on Reddit. I was very impressed with Father John Misty in particular.   Perhaps my view would be different if I were a big Massive Attack fan or whatever, but right now my feeling is that if it's not safe for the shows to go ahead... then it's not safe for the shows to go ahead. I'd much rather they were cautious than roll the dice when it comes to something like that.    Here's hoping everyone has a better day today.
    • It was awful during Father John Misty and I was close to the front. People just shouting and laughing their f-ing heads off about nothing in particular and being louder than the bloody stage.
    • Other things I noted yesterday, away from the obvious…   Positives: - an extra water point towards the back left of the main stages has appeared, which I believe is new for this year (and was much needed) - handing out free ponchos was a good touch  - caroline were fantastic. I’d never been in the Auditori Rockdelux before, it’s a wonderful venue and a great venue if you fancy a more chilled out environment  Negatives: - the talkers. I know it’s always bad here (and most festivals nowadays) but f**k me people wouldn’t shut up yesterday. I wonder if it was partly as a result of people being at artists they had little interest in (due to rain limiting their options), although it wasn’t great during blood orange. We’ll be making an effort to get a spot nearer the front for anyone we particularly care about over the weekend  - not enough staff around (and the ones that are there are largely useless). Most other festivals have them everywhere and are happy to help
