Coachella & Glastonbury

The Stone Roses could be a bit of a disaster. The fans who know them are very forgiving and know all the words and pretty much drown the awful singing. Thousands of curious punters not really knowing what to expect... when that sound comes out of his mouth.... ... whaaa ??

The difference of opinion is there for everyone to see if you look at the comparison between the reaction to the headline performances of Gorillaz at Glastonbury and Coachella in 2010 respectively. They went down a storm at Coachella (supposedly Plastic Beach caught on a lot more over there) but at Glastonbury...well we know what happened

I don't think all of them agreeing to do it was pure luck. I'd imagine the intention of switching from animation to live was with the belief they all would.

I'm not sure Damon does things on luck. As much as people dislike him, he doesn't do things by half measures, and plans meticulously.

I'd imagine most of them had been lined up for the live dates anyway, and with the added incentive of it being a massive date, I can't see it being too hard to have convinced them.

I'll concede it was fortunate they were all free, but I can't imagine many of them turning that down.

With regards to the set, i thought it was a great set. It was more of a performance than a Glastonbury Pyramid headline set, but some of the best are.

It wasn't right for the "shut up and play the hits" Pyramid dwellers, but its good that its not sometimes.

My wife is american, used to work in the music business over there and some of her friends still do. They know their music but nothing about the stone roses at all so are a bit confused by the headliners (also didn't think phoenix were quite at that level). A strong headliner at one festival and in one country can be an unpopular choice at another - the stone roses went down a hell of a lot better when i saw them at heaton park (their own gig immediately) in manchester than headlining optimus in portugal.

but they didn't have ALL of those guests at ALL of their shows, did they? they had a couple (Bobby Womack and De La Soul appeared at most i think) but not all. Glastonbury was the only show that got all of them (i believe), so... maybe luck was the wrong word, but they had a small amount of time to get all of these special guests to agree (i remember before the festival hearing that they'd secured all but Lou Reed, and then he appeared so that might've happened last minute)

the whole thing looked very thrown together - confusion between songs and guests going off and coming on stage. it was a weird thing to watch, but had it's moments (Feel Good Inc. and Clint Eastwood, at the end of the set, were what worked most (maybe because they were the only songs that the entire crowd knew))
