You did still only see one and a half songs from a well intentioned but misjudged setlist. You have to remember this. biggrin.png

I do. And I also remember the people I spoke to afterwards who'd found it equally awe-despairing.

The ones I met who'd thought it was great were people who were fans and had really been looking forward to it. A good one-word summary for everyone else I spoke to about it would be 'dull'.

I mean that once it starts it never ends. In the football thread when racism comes up it takes over with the same old discussion, when Neil gets involved in Bruce the same argument take over with the same old discussion.

I meant nothing more! I think you misunderstood me (easily done...)

Neil's consistently ignored me stating that as a neutral (actually not even that, a 19 year old who actively disliked him and described him as 'bon jovi with trumpets') I was completely won over by him at Glastonbury. I really enjoyed it. Covering Coma Girl as a starter (I'm a big clash fan) got me interested enough to give him a go but then it was really good. Listening to him since, Rosalita and Hungry Heart would've been good but that doesn't matter. He won at least two (me and my mate) cynics over that day.

I agree. But it's over the top american hope. I dunno, he comes across as insincere and hopelessly out of touch to me. A multi millionaire acting like a working class hero is just a bit rum.

But then again I feel the same about billy bragg.

There is also ignorance. People think born in the usa is a patrotic american song. A lot of people equate bruce springsteen as being like ronald reagan. It amuses me greatly

People make too much of the working class hero bit - its as much based on limited exposure to his material as the view of Born in the USA being pro-Reagan. He acknowledges time and time again the conflict between observations about blue collar lifestyles and his own through his songs.

It doesnt mean he is any less able to comment and bring stories to life - in fact I dont think theres anyone better at defining moments in time through one individuals point of view. Jack of all trades on the new album is the most recent example but theres so many others - Nebraska being (IMHO) the most pointed example.

Like others - I come from the deep fanboy side of the fence on this having yet again spent part of this summer following him round on tour. So Im not unbiased. And as for the sliding/ standing on the piano stuff - everytime I see him do it a part of me knows its corny. Love it anyways. Buy him a pint anytime.

You know the biggest insult I ever heard someone say abou bruce is that they compared him to Bono. This is what you are up against I'm afraid! I think seeing him getting photographed with Obama just turns people off.

Then again, I am a huge flaming lips fan so I am no stranger to loving corny onstage antics!

Maybe wayne coyne and bruce sprinsteen arent so different.

Ultimately, who cares what other people think BUT there are some bruce fans on here who rise to the bait every time and whose lifes work seems to be to convince everyone that they must agree that bruce is the messiah. It's what makes me love the bruce threads on here laugh.png

Agree with the zealot bit. In fact was one myself. Re-read some of my own comments a while back on the 2009 Bruce thread and felt a proper plonker. Why I thought writing down imaginary setlists might be interesting to normal people is beyond me. Changed my profile and rejoined this forum to disassociate myself. I now limit myself to one box set a day and only wear a bandanna on a weekend.

And I'm starting to do it again on the 2012 Bruce thread. Bollox.
