Went to see The Roses last night. Wouldn't have been my choice but a friend is visiting and she fancied the cinema and it was that or Downton (absof**kinglutely not).

It was not good. Wasn't funny. Wasn't clever. A bit of a mess. Even the two leads were not great in it. 

Honestly, Benedict Cumberbatch did the Adam Buston podcast last week and that was WAY more fun

Might try and seek out the original. See how that holds up.

Not seen it but I'm told that there's a scene where an allergy is played for laughs that's really rubbed people up the wrong way. Was it as troublesome as I've heard?

Not just once. It isn't great and I can see why people are upset. There is a little part of me thinks that there's an element of over sensitivity to it, that it's a stupid scene(s) in a stupid film but then I don't have to worry about a potentially life threatening allergy for myself or a loved one.

As someone who works in hospitality I was really annoyed every time it showed Olivia Coleman's character cooking while wearing loads of jewellery. And then I was also really annoyed by how sh*t the rest of the film is

I guess it's the nature of the beast when things like these are played for laughs. To some it's just a silly aside but if you actually have it, you're going to struggle to see it as funny. 

 

But then if the film really didn't work for you at all, I guess it just adds to the irritation of having gone to see it. I remember seeing a movie called Let's Be Cops back in 2014, which was truly dreadful and the more I was there, the more I just found to get wound up by it.

watched the new Nosferatu yesterday.

 

i really wanted to like it, i really did - but in all honesty i just found it to be very very boring.

I'm not sure about this as an idea. The first Simpsons movie holds up surprisingly well tbf - I watched it last night to be sure - but feels like it's a show that really just kinda lost everything that was good about it, to say nothing of a question about whether the voice cast still have the chops they did even in 2007.

I can still remember the week it started in the UK, I think it was 1990 a year after the states. My parents had signed upto sky the week before for the first time as there was a big promo going on for it.

 

longevity has been amazing but yes, times change, characters like Apu were cancelled and it has lost something.

Many long-term Simpsons fans would question if the moment when Apu was re-cast was even a moment when it lost something. Pretty sure there are so many Simpson communities on the Internet who think anything released after 2000 is not worth bothering with.

Disney/Pixar have released a first trailer for Toy Story 5, which... k. I didn't think we needed one, but clearly Disney's original ideas aren't cutting it. Kinda curious to go for a movie that appears to be about how tablet computers wrap childhood while likely getting a place to be shown on tablets to kids forevermore.

 

Also, seems like everyone online is going "Somehow Woody Returned" a la Palpatine based on how TS4 ended.

Went to see The Running Man last night. It was alright. Kind of quirky dystopian fun with Glen Powell doing a decent job in an almost Tom Cruise style role. 

 

What I will say is that I found the amount of product placement genuinely distracting, in a way I don't think I've seen in a major movie in a while.

up until now, I believed that the Ice Cube War Of The Worlds was the worst movie I had ever seen, and actually THAT bad it would probably be the worst film I would ever see...

 

it is therefore somewhat unfathomable to me that I have just sat here and watched something that makes Ice Cube seem like Orson Welles...

I thought it was genuinely brilliant. 

Hallow Road that is. 

Haven't seen Ice Cube's War of the Worlds but I kinda want to to see if it's as bad as is made out. 

Although based on my opinion of Hallow Road you'll probably think I'll like it.

I've not seen Hallow Road but I've seen some people have it as a top 10 film of 2025, particularly one or two film critics. But I guess there can sometimes be a dissonance where things don't land. To assess one award contender, for example, my brother was meh on One Battle After Another, which I thought was really good.

If Iron Maiden don't get him onstage at some point they are missing a trick. That scene was incredible.

Oscar nominations 2026: the full list | Film | The Guardian

 

I know the Oscars seem to have lost quite a bit of their shine in recent years but always intriguing to see these. I do kinda see it at this point as a recommendation of films I haven't seen.

 

Although having said that, I have seen the ones with the 2 most nominations (Sinners and One Battle..., both of which are very good). I liked the F1 movie but Best Picture was unexpected. And kinda funny to me as a noted F1 follower who saw a lot of people that watch F1 disliked the movie.

Take it y'all both think I should pop along to see 28YL:TBT then.

 

It's on my list to go and do, just gotta find the right moment in my schedule. Intrigued as well given the higher classification as an 18 and just general aura from the trailer hint that it's going to be a lot different in vibe to 28 Years Later's portrait of a family in crisis.
