Not a new one but American Movie was recommended by Richard Ayoade on Adam Buxton's podcast, then popped up as leaving Prime in a few days so thought I'd give it a go. 

Really really good. 

Give it a watch before it leaves Prime.

It's always worth checking it out for yourself. I think I might be the only person to enjoy that Ghostbusters film with the female cast.

Absolutely.

Although the best I could say about that one is that I didn't hate it. Mostly because of Kate McKinnon. She was ace.

Enjoyed Gladiator 2 a lot. Denzel was having so much fun!

Spellbound, the new Netflix animation is very average. The kids seemed to enjoy it though, which is the main thing (apparently).

Gladiator 2 was... something.

 

There were multiple moments where I burst out laughing. It came across to me like I was watching the summary of about 20 different YouTube history videos at the same time.

It was a ridiculous spectacle and Denzel was having so much fun.

Well I wasn't bored and agreed Denzel looked like he truly understood the assignment in chewing the scenery. So there's that.

Seeing as we're now in the season, anyone got any Christmas movie recommendations?

 

Even just the usual reruns this time of year just in case I haven't been arsed to watch them.

Klaus for sure. Nutcrackers with Ben Stiller (starting to resemble his dad now) was also worth a watch.

Would make for something different to watching Elf for the 40th time. Although even then I actually missed the first ten minutes or so when I saw that in the cinema as a child so I still am somewhat less familiar with that segment, even if the bits when he's first in New York is the most quoted.

Couple of new films yesterday

 

A Real Pain.

Really good. Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg are just superb as very different cousins, although part of me thinks they weren't acting as such, just playing versions of themselves. I don't mean that really, they are both great. I can definitely see some of my friendships in their relationship (I'm very much David in this).

The rest of the cast don't get loads to do, it's very much David and Benji's film, but they are all very good, especially Eloge and James, the tour guide 

 

Nosferatu 

Liked/admired rather than loved. Definitely one to see in the cinema as it looks (and sounds actually) absolutely stunning. Some great performances, especially from Lily Rose Depp, and it's all dialled up to 11 as it should be. Hard to put my finger on why I didn't love it but I definitely glanced at my watch a couple of times. 

Had to stop myself thinking of What we do in the Shadows a couple of times too. Think they might have ruined vampire films for me.

As someone that enjoys watching F1 races, I'm not sure if this is going to be a nice encapsulation of why it's fun or a total Hollywood pantomime. Or maybe it'll be a bit of both.

If anybody has missed the Best Picture nominees, Cineworld looks to be running seven of them over the next week, one per night, in the build-up. (No I'm Still Here, because it was only released today, and no Emila Perez, because it's a Netflix film. I'm not sure why there's no Nickel Boys.)

As it is, I have Monday off and my local Odeon has a showing of Conclave. So that feels like an idea.

watched The Ritual yesterday.

 

I'd seen it a few years ago but remembered absolutely nothing about it.

 

I enjoyed it, thought it was pretty good - at least the first two thirds anyways.

 

thought it looked great, cinematography was cool, did a good job of creating atmosphere, and I REALLY liked the scene when they all freaked out after spending a night in the scary cabin.

 

thought the story fell apart a bit as it went on - afterwards I keep trying to figure out if it was all some sort of metaphor for the guilt that the main character felt... but actually I think its just to be taken literally as what we see... which is proper cheese.

 

enjoyed it tho.

Sure enough, that's what I did.

 

Conclave was interesting. Like a mix of political thriller, Mean Girls and reality show. Got me intrigued to read the novel. May also be unintentionally topical given we may be seeing the conclave that picks a new Pope soon, sadly.
