To be fair England give the ball away all the time and Ireland are like a worse version of England. I think Ireland did well to qualify, unless the manager had a magic wand they were never going to do anything.

Having looked at the draw I'm not sure there is a huge advantage between finishing 1st or 2nd for England and France. It's swings and roundabout, avoid Spain and your likely to have consecutive games against Europes top 2 historical tournament sides.

After just reading someone's post that mentioned it, I'm not considering going to see Madness on Saturday night as my kid is here for the weekend and he loves them .... so England need to make sure they top the group so I don't miss the match.

I'd say that England have a much better chance of beating Spain than they do Germany.

That's not me saying that Germany are a necessarily a much better side than Spain, just that I think England stand a better chance of handling the Spanish style of play to the German style.

Topping the group wouldn't mean England avoid Germany in the semis as they would be in the same half of the draw. I believe Spain are the most vulnerable earlier in the tournament so better to play earlier. An advantage of playing Spain over Germany is they rarely thrash teams, so a bit of luck could keep any half decent side close.

he handled them admirably in that friendly at Wembley not so long ago.

Im not sure you can read too much into Spain friendly, they have lost several since the world cup. I suspect their opposition tries far harder than they do. As for cutting edge I'm not sure if they ever had any! Their last 2 tournament wins have seen very few thrashings from memory.
