Lineup 2014

I personally feel it's a festival you do once or twice to experience it and tick off a large number of big acts. I'm far more interested in going to Roskilde/Sziget/Primavera or some other Euro fest next time I go abroad than back there. I had a great time and I'm delighted I did it but I'm not itching to go back short of an incredible lineup (Tool and Daft Punk).

I'm definitely interested in looking into other fests, but friends-wise it's definitely a good starter place to get them interested in going abroad, with the big names drawing them in. I don't think they realised festivals existed outside of England before I sent them the RW site :(

Oh yeah, I completely agree with that. It's definitely a good icebreaker on those grounds. The free travel within Belgium helps reduce costs as well.

Last time I went to MK Bowl I paid £45 with fees I think. Crazy how expensive things have got...

For the ~£80 Pearl Jam ticket + £40 for the train I could go to 5 or 6 other gigs or a small festival. No 3 hour set is worth that, especially when they'll only play half the big hitters and load the rest with newer album tracks inevitably

Gigs are a hugely different atmosphere. It's a much better experience seeing a band you love at their own gig than at a festival.

Which goes on the mistaken assumption you'd watch all of the headliners, which isn't the case even in a good year.

Artists are putting show prices up because people aren't buying albums and it's the only reliable way left to make money. Saying that they're ripping us off so you'll steal something/get on the cheap is like deciding that the gov is over-pricing stamps so you'll steal from the local corner shop.

1) I don't think it's worth it for that maybe extra bit of atmosphere. I have seen bands at their own gigs and fests and yes, sometimes, but most of the time it's the same for me

2)true, but I was just getting at what you can get value for money if you choose too. I'd still make up the cash for 10 pounds per artist I see, plus the extra value of the festival atmosphere which I thinks amazing.

3) I did note big artists - spotify is perfectly legal too, no stealing involved ;)

1) It's less of an issue for main stage headliners, but seeing Lanegan in an empty tent at Reading vs a packed Bristol Academy with the whole crowd loving it was a hugely different experience. ATDI Brixton vs Reading. Smaller bands who get shortish sets and the crowd don't know their stuff it's a lot more worth seeing at their own show.

2) You get value for money at festivals of course, I just wouldn't want to go October-May without seeing live music.

3) I referenced not buying albums. Spotify may be legal but it doesn't actually give as much funding to artists as youtube.

1) completely agree, and I still go to smaller artists gigs where you aren't paying the fucking sun to see someone which was the point I was making

2) yep, same, I was talking about the huge headliner/sub bands that charge 70 quid to see them. Wait for a fest for them usually, and it's a shame because I love pearl jam but can't justify it and have seen them before at the very festival this board is based on!

3)agree again. But I don't care about the bands who are have the lifestyles to have 5 homes in exotic countries while maintain a life of touring and snorting coke off whatever they like, I can listen to the, on spotify. If a newish band comes along and I really dig them, I still buy albums and tickets to see them should they be around.

All in all I think it's fair!

I'd pay through the nose for acts I love and haven't seen, (or for NIN/Radiohead/The Cure again), but yeah, I don't like ridiculous fees.

3) How many popstars do you listen to :P

Yeah, certain special acts I guess would get it but that I haven't seen before. And by get it I mean my ticket sale. Not my penis.

3) ALL OF THEM!

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
