Anyone else think that IOW is looking a little poor this year. I often thought some of the acts they get are top draw, then I am often put off by the pop acts lower down, but this year there is so few that I would watch.

I can see R&L getting Zane Lowe in the dance tent.

I like the idea of IOW but musically it never really appeals. As it spreads itself over such a wide remit musically and doesn't have much depth regarding stages it's hard to get excited a great deal lower down the bill that you can't see at other festivals. I mean to have to choose between Bon Jovi, Blondie or the dance stage to close the festival? Fuck. The Thursday night looks best - Happy Mondays, Blockheads and Grandmaster Flash.

I went in 2004 and enjoyed it as it came across as very friendly and really in tune with the ialnd and the community, there was a good mix of visiting teenagers and older locals, although I don't know if that's still the case.

Excuse me if I seem overly nieve but I have a question. Rumours are set to get real intense, I am a Courteeners fan and would very much like to see new album Anna at leeds this year. However even without any rumours floating about i feel its almost already nailed on they will play V instead of Leeds. Why is this? Why are they booked for V so much more? its not like they have the commercial success to have the label as a 'pop' band. I understand they have a large chav following as a result of Oasis, but they had a very full tent of 'normal people' at leeds last year. Is lad rock just more suited to a pop festival?

For me it just seems pretty obvious there more of a V fest band, they seem to have a more V fest sound and attitude in the sense they are quite laddish. As it seems over the past few V festival likes to have at least one laddish type headliner hence why its more likely bands like kasabian, oasis, stone roses (arguably) headline alongside poppy acts. Whereas R/L seems to go for the more rock based acts such as foo fighters, muse and alternative acts such as the cure and arcade fire. Therefore throughout the under-card the bands are more likely to reflect this, such as courteeners and the enemy being more likely to play V and bands like deftones, foals and enter shikari at R/L. Obviously there is plenty of room for crossover due to the interchanging demographics, but if you were gonna take a stab in the dark its more often than not you'd place The Courteeners on the V festival side of things. Just my opinion of course.

They played V the two years previously on the back of a new album on main stage when they were in demand. Last year they played 3rd down on NME when they wernt in any kind of demand. Theyve said before they get offered better slots at V, just dont understand why?

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
