As almost all the ones I've heard I really loved, I'll be checking the others out. I was a bit disappointed with the How To Destroy Angels album though, considering I'm a bit obsessive regarding NIN and anything Trent does. Still enjoyed it, but wouldn't say it's 'stunning'.

The Sophtware Slump is a reissue as well. Sadly, Grandaddy broke up several years ago. Cracking album though.

Ah yeah I should have said some of them vary from "stunning" to "just bloody decent". My point was that good music is out there. It always was, always is. Check out Dark Dark Dark - absolutely beautiful stuff, as is King Creosote. Also, this is a snippet from a fairly tranquil-in-tone playlist, there's just as many metal/thrash/hardcore albums sprouting up too. Devildrivers new album is excellent, and Machine Head just popped another one out this year.

In fact as the world steadily goes to hell I'd suspect there will be an equal and wonderfully opposite reaction in all forms of art. Until the powers that be start burning books and banning shit.

Hence why this law is bad news.

There's a growing number of detractors from the bill:

http://www.nydailyne...rticle-1.979020

Hearings in the House of Representatives on the Stop Internet Piracy Act (SOPA) began Wednesday, sparking a campaign by dozens of companies to keep the bill from becoming law.

"Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities."

And with the shift the internet has created, I don't see the major labels as having any actual contribution any more

Oh c'mon - they still have the power to make or break someone.

It's not talent that got Gaga to be the biggest selling artist of the moment in a very small moment but the marketing and hype that a record co can deliver.

They of course can't do that for everyone, so they don't - else they'd simply drive themselves bankrupt. But little of this side of things has changed in the last 40+ years.

while they constantly try and push for laws that will help maintain the status quo, allowing them to enjoy the same control and privileges, while what they actually offer is of decreasing value.

The same could be said of any other industry tho - they all try to protect their own interests; in the UK if not elsewhere it's their legal duty to do that.

And just about every product is of decreasing value, due to how the world changes.

I'm not really trying to sup[port them cos in many ways I feel the same as you, but I still dislike the myth that gets pushed of stuff being 'stolen' from musicians, or that record companies no longer serve a purpose. The growth in radio listening (which funnily enough should also be suffering a similar internet effect but is not) gets to show that record companies will still be around for at least few decades yet.

Ooh, how did I not know about this? I have their Black Refuge E.P from a few years ago which is excellent. Any Jose Gonzales fans out there should check this out (its his other band).

Just to add a few more to the list (the M83 and Washed Out albums are particularly stunning)...

M83 – Hurry Up, We're Dreaming.

Washed Out – Within and Without

The War On Drugs – Slave Ambient

Yuck – Yuck

Braids – Native Speaker

Death In Vegas – Trans-Love Energies

Gang Gang Dance – Eye Contact

Amon Tobin – ISAM

EMA – Past Life Martyred Saints

Carbon Based Lifeforms – Twentythree

Looks like this SOPA bill is going to be passed in some reduced form. Cant upload clips from TV shows/movies to Facebook, Twitter etc or you may be breaching copyright law. Basically, you may have to be very careful of everything you share on the internet. A clip of some clown falling off a chair may be copyrighted to someone.

Wikipedia on blackout tomorrow for 24 hours. Good to see.

Twitters' CEO Dick Costolo criticising Wikipedia for doing so, calling them "foolish" and "silly". Not so good to see.

It's like Ian Hislop said a couple of days ago regarding media (and others) isn't it? There are already laws in place to deal with these offences. It doesn't need more regulation, just enforcement of the current legislation.

Still, why enforce an old law when you can make a new one eh?

Which is clearly still illegal right now...

If I upload a Premiership Football Match and claim to not know it is copyrighted then that isn't going to be much of a defence...

If you didn't take the photo, film the movie or write the song... Then you probably don't own the rights...

Got this back in reply;

We have just six days to stop the US Congress censoring the world’s Internet. After massive public pressure this shocking bill is losing traction, but to bury it we need to urgently pull out all the stops.

The US Congress was poised to pass a law allowing the US to censor access to any website around the world. But after we delivered our 1.25 million strong petition to the White House, it came out against the bill and with public pressure at boiling point even some bill backers are switching sides. Now, the Wikipedia-led blackout protest has rocketed the campaign to the top of the news.

But in the final hours, our opponents are desperately trying to revive it. It’s up to us to stop the US from gagging our Internet as we know it. Click below to sign the urgent global petition now then send this to everyone. Our ally Senator Wyden will read out our names during a filibuster to block the vote in Congress:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_internet_signing_f/?vl

The bill would make the US one of the worst Internet censors in the world -- joining the ranks of countries like China and Iran. The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) would allow the US government to block any of us from accessing sites like YouTube, Google, or Facebook.

But Avaaz voices are making a difference and amazingly we could win! After we delivered our 1.25 million-strong petition to high level officials, the White House came out against the legislation. And our massive push alongside national campaigners has catalysed a flurry of opposition from powerful online companies like Craigslist and now Wikipedia is leading an Internet blackout protest tomorrow.

Now, our mighty opposition is picking off bill proponents and even co-sponsors one by one. Last weekend Senator Cardin, who cosponsored the legislation, announced that he will vote against it! And six prominent Republicans, including two other co-sponsors, penned a letter requesting that the bill be shelved. We are turning the tide, but the dark forces of censorship are well funded and we need to keep ramping up the pressure right up until the vote. Sign this emergency petition to save the internet now and forward it to everyone:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_internet_signing_f/?vl

This US legislation could infringe on all of our freedoms. But if we win, we will show that when people unite with one voice from all over the world we can stop the abuse of power anywhere. We have brought this bill back from the brink. Now, if we amplify our voices, we can put an end to the most powerful Internet censorship threat that the world has ever seen.

With hope,

Dalia, Ian, Alice, Ricken, Diego, David, and the Avaaz Team

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
