My only argument was really against the foreign policy angle, its complete and utter balls, you really think those looting Wimpey last night really gave a f**k, or indeed had more the slightest clue what UK foreign policy is?0 They wont know and wont give a f**k. If they're happy to smash up their own community, I suspect they don't really give a f**k what the UK is doing anywhere else.

IMO the kids who are robbing and wrecking places are the result of a generation who've been brought up having been told they should never have to wait for anything. Easy credit meant we were all encouraged to buy stuff we couldn't afford rather than waiting until we could. These kids have been allowed to get used to this lifestyle so we can't be that surprised that they don't want to give it up now they and their families can't get credit any more.

What you've not been able to explain with that is why it's happened when its happened, or why the people responsible are all living in particular situations.

I better clarify as the foreign policy angle came from me; my point was not that any of the roiters were making a direct link themselves between their actions and those of UK foreign policy (although i do think that they'd have an awareness that UK troops are present in afghanistan and possibly even that the RAF/Navy is bombing libya, of course they're unlikely to have a considered opinion on the matter but i think that they'd have some clue that it's happening) - my perspective is that, when you have a government which follows a 'might is right' foreign policy, this sends out all manner of messages on a number of levels that inevitably has consequences for the conduct of domestic policy and becomes symptomatic of the 'zeitgeist' evident in society. As such, no, i don't think that any of the roiters give a flying f*ck about dead afghans or libyans (or even dead uk service personnel) - which is part of the problem. The government doesn't care about dead afghans, libyans or soldiers (or, if they do it's only insofar as how it affects the opinion polls) and that's all part of the same problem. I'm not saying that any of the rioters had, for a nanosecond, any congition of foreign policy in their actions, but what i am saying is that when you have a government that follows certain policies and that sends out certain messages and has a certain mindset of how to do things, then these policies and actions mindset have implications far beyond their immediate manifestations.

They're all going to have different motivations, to generalise like you have is massively naive. Yup Im sure its certainly part of the problem, Im also pretty sure that many saw it as an easy chance to rob stuff.

You can bang on abot disaffected youth all you want from your middle class home in Bristol, as can Bazza Fish from his about robbing tits from his, wherever it may be, in reality, I suspect the motivations vary massively from person to person and us debating it on here is only going to end up in the same, horrifically dull liberal vs slightly less liberal debate that happens on every event like this.

And while I've mentioned Dave Moron, I've done so only in the context of him being the one in power right now. I don't put the blame solely on him or the tories - the 'other tories' have their own huge guilt for having brought this about, by "being relaxed about the filthy rich". Etc, etc.
