I thought they were great. Julian was clearly hammered, but other than that it was excellent musically. What people are picking up here is Julians voice and not the rest of the band who were playing amazingly.

None of the artists get paid they do it for the extra exposure, the only thing i could find was that the 2008 event cost 1.4 million for the 2 day event-but then that's probably just a drop in the ocean considering how many staff they take to Glastonbury.

Big weekend can't pay a lot. They won't fork out tax payers money for things like that (as cynical as people might want to be).

So they do it purely for publicity. Radio 1 don't shut up about it for a month before and two after.

Pretty silly of The Strokes to be so awful.

Mind you, they probably think they should he headlining. I'd deffo see Gaga though.

Why can the Foo Fighters smash every gig they ever play whether it be to 3 people in a front room or 100K stadium? Dave Grohl is a totally different class of professional and someone who is more at ease with any situation thrown at him.

seeing as it would be one of their largest audiences, it seems silly not to.

If they didn't want to do it, why did they?

but then I never really 'got' The Strokes

and the idea that Radio 1 could stop the band getting any alcohol or drugs they wished for is quite funny... :P

One of their largest audiences? I assume you mean in the UK but either way you are wrong. They have announced a UK tour in July. They are touring the rest of Europe, US and have a lot of festivals this year. Most possibly one of their smallest.

I didnt think the actual playing was that bad it just seemed that Julian couldnt give a f**k, poor showing by him really. He probably kept looking down thinking why did I wear these shit trainers with a full leather get up. In all fairness it looked like the drummer kept looking around at the rest of the band as if to say "whats his problem", well thats what I picked up from watching it.

I watched a little bit last night and they did seem really bad, Julian being the cause for that.

He definitely looked like he didn't want to be there. I was saying to missus, Is guess its the fact they were playing that pretty small stage with massive crowds for Gaga at the main stage.

Possibly didn't realise how small a stage when they agreed (or misjudged their popularity to Gaga).

Still whatever the reason, unprofessional. Arcade Fire played to half empty field headlining Leeds last year and just belted it out anyway.

I'm actually happy Pulp are headlining Leeds now for the day we are going to get tickets, as its always disappointing to end on a shit act, and judging by that performance by Strokes last night, it could be hit or miss. I'm encouraged by comments from last years festivals though.

Only saw a bit of them last night and can't say I was overly impressed. I've seen The Strokes a few times and IMO they've got gradually worse live over the years. In 2001 they were amazing, they were exciting and had an edge to them, in 2004 they were pretty decent but Julian was wasted don't know if that made it better or worse, last year at rockness is just didn't enjoy it, they just don't seem to be enjoying it anymore.

i saw them at rockness last year and they blew me away, so its clearly each to their own! that was the only time i've ever seen them so i have little to judge against but i've seen a ton of bands over the years and they were a top drawer festival headliner in my opinion.

when its their own crowd i think they'll be back on top form.

f**k them. You know, you show up and give a half arsed performance, that marks you out as a dick in my book. All the excuses on this thread? ah, they weren't that into it, ah, they were tired, ah they were this that and the other. f**k that shit. Hardly working down a f**king coal mine, is it? Give it your all or don't f**king bother showing up

As far as I'm concerned, you have total artistic freedom when it comes to your set, play whatever the f**k you want, but phoning in a mediocre performance? Unforgiveable.

It is always a lot different watching a performance on tv to being there. Ive watched some recordings of gigs ive been to and thought they were pretty poor, even though i loved them at the time. Whether its that the tv doesnt pick up the sound mix well enough, or the drugs, or what, i dont know.

Anyway strokes are still a cracking band imo, with 3 great albums, and i certainly wouldnt skip the chance of seeing them based on last nights mediocrity

Bit different though isn't it? That was AF's big chance. You only get one of them. Headlining a second stage at a commercial gig, to a crowd of about 10,000 is not going to mean much when they're already booked to play the biggest festivals across Europe.

    • I’ve had a good sleep and I feel weirdly zen about the whole thing.   My first Primavera, so not the greatest first impression. I guess today couldn’t be any worse, right?   Thoroughly enjoyed Men I Trust and Geese. Cupra is a beautiful stage and the crowd seemed fun, friendly and engaged.   I think it probably could have gone even worse, considering how dangerous the crowding felt at times.   Anyway, we go again.
    • Brighton centre is a weird old venue for the Mary Wallopers - a great band, a really good live spectacle, and its a saturday night as well which sets it all up - but its at the bloody Centre? a charmless nonsense of a conference centre? Brighton dome is a ten min walk away and is so much nicer a place to see bands its ridiculous!    ah well, i'll probably mosy along anyways . . .
    • So bad honestly. I get that bad weather happens but their communication was non existent. When you're managing crowds of tens of thousands of people, it's just not good enough. I left when Massive Attack was cancelled (the first time) and it genuinely did feel unsafe trying to get out. No one knew what was going on, people still sitting in the ground when there were hoards of people trying to leave, no crowd management at all...   I've been to PS enough times to know sometimes you need to just roll with it but this was way worse than "the bar queue was 30 minutes long".    Today will be better but still feel super disappointed.
