A lot of people are confusing their music tastes for that of the general public. Strangely enough, the majority of the public like the bands on the lineup. These bands all sell huge numbers of albums. They are all currently (with the exception of one or two, e.g. The Cure) riding on the waves of success that being popular brings them. It seems that a lot of people here would like a musical festival to be tailored directly to their interests. If a band you like isn't on the lineup, go see them in concert. Don't shit up the thread (and the festival itself) complaining about how this or that band "deserve" to be there, because Reading has "such a history" or whatever bollocks. Yes, there are bands out there that could, and perhaps should, have been booked (I'm looking at you, Green Day), but they weren't. Melvin has booked the acts he knows people want to see, and that's the festival we get. If you like it, go, if you don't, more tickets for people that actually like this music.

As an aside to that rant, any possibility The D (and Franz Ferdinand) could be FR headliners, like Ash were in 2010? I know both are pretty huge, but they haven't released albums for a while so they could be a solid booking for a smaller audience.

Crystal Castles: Crystal Castles' live show relies heavily on the gloomy, intimidating atmosphere created through their biting sonic and visual attack provided through a heap of smoke, darkness and unforgiving strobes. Fair point, all the the slots left to announce seem too low for them. Unless they never get announced and it's a secret set.

Agreed, but I don't think it's helped by one of their mainstage headliners having a string of major shows of their own that had been announced a while before. R+L's headliners don't have their own shows at all.

This years headliners have been generally regarded as the best overall bookings at R&L for a while. Which may seem great, but i do agree it seems like they may have come at a price, and as a result the undercard may be seen as weaker than in the past.

But then again there were 'weaker' headliners in 2010, but that had a much better undercard. So how are FR supposed to win? ..

Headliners alone will never sell tickets (as this year seems to be showing) .. Yet a stronger undercard doest either, as people are instantly drawn to the headliners and make judgement based on that.

It's all swings and roundabouts really.

In my opinion i think theres a string of things for why the festival isnt selling out instantly anymore:

The recession

Too many festivals in which a lot of people have already seen many bands and have no desire to see them again in some cases, so when there announced for R&L there not that bothered.

Festival appeal is falling in general as V hasnt sold out either which appeals to a lot of the pop loving teens of today

Weaker lineups (in some peoples opinions)

and also in R&L case i think they are worrying to much about gaining new punters but totally forgetting how much they are alienating the hardcore fans that have been going for years and years, i only say this because i know so many of my friends who have been going for like 6 to 10 years on the trott, just arnt feeling it this year due to the lineup.

I think its these things collectively (and many others that i cant think of right now) that are causing slower sales on all festivals, the only thing i cant help but think though is that when Glastonbury comes back next year, it will sell out.

I know people will disagree with this but this is just my opinion on it.

I think the majority of people can see, objectively, it's a weak/poor festival line-up. For R&L, it's a bad festival line-up. I think your points about how the public "likes" this music are made instantly void by the slow ticket sales. Even with the payment plan. If it was as popular as you said, it would have sold out by now, would it not? Glastonbury has the payment plan, and more to sell, yet sold out in four hours. I think most people have ignored personal taste surprisingly, and have been able to identify there's some deep rooted problems throughout the line-up.

The point of an internet forum is hardly to go "if you don't like it, go somewhere else" or similar bullshit. It's to discuss it.

Few very strange placings, eg Bombay moving up from 3rd on NME to 3rd mainstage and Vaccines moving up from 4th NME to the same position. Both dont seem anywhere near as big as third placed bands in recent years, Offspring, Interpol, Biffy, dizzee and Weezer. Even if Ten D slot in above the vaccines i dont think it would look all that better and it wouldnt really run very fluidly...

I think the line up is great, I love the saturday main apart from Shikari and Kasabian. Sun top 3 will be great. The Cure will be epic. I kinda wish The Cure could have been swapped with Kasabian. Also Kaisers should be in between Flo and The Vaccines and Shikari should be where kaisers are with the possibility of Ten D being under the black keys. But I still love it and I'm looking forward to the rest of the announcements.
