Yep. I'm a leper. I normally start training courses by doing the usual "The fire exits are this way, the toilets are down there" etc and then I ask "Hands up the smokers." I put my hand up, look for the other lepers and explain reassuringly "We'll have a fag break about 11.30. Everyone else can have a coffee break but we'll cheat and have a fag and then a coffee."

The last course I ran we had about 40 participants. I put my hand up and found I was staring at a sea of people not one of whom had put a hand up. So I said "When you all have a coffee at 11.30 I'm going out for a fag."

Fagbreak time arrived. I went outside and I found three of the participants also came out and lit up.

"You didn't put your hands up," I said.

"Well," they explained, "We were too ashamed to admit we smoked."

We sad lepers have got to stick together. You still meet all the interesting people in smokers corner.

Oh, and the answer to the question is I smoke Royals.

It seems to me that people start when they're young and then spend the rest of their lives trying to give up. Am I right in saying that there's not actually anything enjoyable in it, it's just that once you're addicted you feel like you need them? Just not really worth it.

And that wasn't meant to sound like a school teacher's PSHE preach.

yeah - I seem to have disapeared from a couple of threads, not sure why

my apologies - by accident I marked you as a spammer, which hides all of that 'spammers' posts. I realised my error straightaway, and believe I've put everything back as it was before, but if not please let me know of any outstanding issues and I'll get them put right.

Nope i don't smoke. Saves my money, saves my lungs, i'm not constantly looking for the next fag, i don't get aggitated because the we're not having a fag break and i don't stink afterwards.

Smokers don't understand how disgusting they smell. I'll have been in my brothers car and he will be smoking, i leave and all i can do is smell the smoke on my clothes..

yeah, but that's true of many things that a person doesn't do themselves.

It's a traditional idea for the British that the French stink of garlic (probably more from the days when British cooking was so bland that we didn't use garlic), and there's somewhere - I think it's Japan but might be wrong - that finds 'westerners' stink of sour milk because they don't consume milk themselves.

oh no, it's all fine now :)

I posted a website link without much explanation so that's my fault (would've looked like spamming)

Well, it's not 'your fault' cos (as I should do) I checked the thread and saw it wasn't spam ... but I'd already opened your profile page before reading what you'd posted as I would with a spammer, and then after checking the post and seeing it waasn't spam I went into auto-mode and stupidly clicked on the (viewable only to moderators) 'flag as spammer' link in your profile anyway.

Bloody spammers are pissing me right off at the moment - there's loads that needs dealing with every day. :(

Is it a new topic problem or posting in threads?

Can you not just have a system where you must have x number of posts before you can start a thread? (Which you may or may not have, I have no idea).

the forums software does have a feature - which is switched off - which can stop a newly registered user from starting a new topic until they've made X amount of posts.

I've always felt that it would be wrong to use it, because lots of people register because they have a specific thing they want to ask about, and for which starting a new thread is the most appropriate way to do it.

As for the spammers, they'd simply change to posting their spam in existing threads - which is actually a bigger hassle for dealing with than if their spam is in a thread they've started.

Are the spammers actual people then or automatic software things (I'm not so clued up on the terminology)? If it's the latter then do those write the word things (that you have to do to show that you're a human when you sign up to stuff) actually work or can they get through them?

Most of the spams are from 'bots' (automatic software things). Those 'write the word' things stop some but not others.

    • Same here, when the lineup dropped it looked very strong but this year I’m considering more whether I buy tickets for enjoyment or fomo.   Speaking of that dilemma, I caved and bought a Turnstile Piece Hall ticket so I’ll see you there 😂
