Board Games...

I have a really old copy of Totopoly (circa 1940) at my parent's house. Its basically a horse racing game. One side of the board is used for training your horses and the other side is a race course. I used to love playing it as a kid. You can bet on other people's horses during the race too.

Holy crap, its worth £150!

Ours isn't in that good condition though, some of the horses are falling apart.

It's brilliant. Very simple game really, lay a tile and choose what to do with your men. What's so good though is that because of the way the tiles go down, no 2 games are ever the same and the tactics you use have to change. ALso it only takes about 30-40 mins a game so you can get through loads in an evening.

I'm shocked! I've got loads of old 30s/40s games as I was the only grandchild interested in them! If the 40s edition is worth £150 how much is the first edition? Our horses are in 'worn condition' and the strings have all been replaced, and some of the money might be missing, some is written on in felt tip in that spikey doodle of a young me or my sister, but it's pretty much all there.

do you's play with old or new rules then? sounds quite interesting, but not as good as monopoly for me.

I doooo love a boardgame - none of my family are very keen on them though, and i cant convince my cantankerous old granddad to play anything other than Wizard. We always play Wizard which is a form of contract whist but with 60 cards in the pack with 4 wizards and 4 jesters. Its a good game but we have to have an in depth match anaylsis after every hand.

Usually goes something like this

"you wizarded my trump"

"well, i needed that trick"

"but we were under-called"

"well i couldnt garantee hearts would come round again and i needed the trick"

"hmph! Fine!"

"Fine"

but its usually much longer than that. drives me mad but i still play!

i've not really got anyone to play with this christmas. unless my brother and his fiance come round on boxing day. even then, it's only going to be 4 player. better fun with more!

I think its simplicity is what makes it such a good game. The farmers are slightly tricky to get your head round, but they are key to winning the game!

One of the expansion packs (Inns and Cathedrals I think) is supposed to be really good too, but haven't played it myself.

Always loved playing Cluedo and Monopoly as a kid. Haven't really played a boardgame in years but we do go to a nightclub in Glasgow which has boardgames in the bar, might have to sit and have a go one night.

The old school version Game of Life with the spinning wheel, mountains you stick into/onto the board and the little girl and boy pins you fill the car up with.

I played a version that was re-imagined for the 21st century and it was pants compared to the 20th century version.

Apparently in the new Monopoly Revolution...you pass go...you get £2million!!! WTF???

We've been using Challenj and Cranium the past couple of years which is always good fun - adds a bit of variety into the games! However my mum brought this new game called 'In a Pickle' and we tried it out the other day - basically you lots of cards with various nouns on (desk, universe, festival, DNA, etc) there are four cards in the middle then each player gets 5 more, you then have to put a card down if your card is bigger than the one that's in the middle, quite confusing to begin with but once you get the hang of it you get very competitive and start thinking out the box (cell - can be blood cell, cell-phone, jail cell and so on).

Anyone remember/ever play 'Tony Blackburn's 'CHARTBUSTER''? You had to go round the board collecting record 'sales' and doing gigs with the object of having a hit record with a million sales with bonus squares for radio play, appearances on TOTP and suchlike - and, on the basis of sales and revenues, you could buy a better 'car' to travel quicker round the board (an 'e' type jag being the most expensive car, a mini clubman being the cheapest). There were also 'penalty' squares based on being caught for drink driving, police raids and offering bungs to radio executives. A seventies classic. Had a copy a few years ago and it was great fun. made the mistake of flogging it on ebay for about £40, short-term gain as i should have kept it.

The Buzz quiz games on PS2 / PS3 are pretty good if you got the kit. Great fun, easy for people to play and they've got brilliant presentation.

just remembered 13 deadend drive. can't remember what it was about, think it was similar to cluedo. bloody loved it though!
