I've read 50/60% of Sandman. First 5 trades. Dunno why but it never really clicked. Its one of the only "canon" runs that I've only half of on the shelf. Normally if I get the first trade/hardcover I'll get them all. But Sandman just sits there sneering at me every day.

Doll's House or Season of Mists didn't bite? I can no longer take your opinion on comics seriously.

The 1st one's not brilliant, while still being good. Doll's House is really good, there's some great ones in Dream Country, but Season of Mists is fantastic. Brief Lives is the best, but Season of Mists very close.

Bar "Good Omens", which I realise is only partly written by him, and the first half of "Sandman" I don't think I've read anything else by Gaiman. His stuff doesnt grab me, lads, sorry. Don't have the patience for it or something.

You've got the patience for Morrison's preaching but not Gaiman's carefully constructed magic? Wow.

I don't tend to read stuff related to the traditional superheroes much though, which means I'm exposed to v. different writers.

Putting "Animal Man" to one side (!) what other stuff do you think is "preachy" from GM?

I don't see it in JLA, NXM, Flex, All Star Superman, Filth, Invisibles, Seaguy, We3, B&R.

Don't think I'm alone in "not getting" Sandman... will have to review this evening which book I got up to.

Pretty sure it was the 5th volume lads. I'm currently re-reading Simonsen's "Thor" and might have the space to go back and re-examine Sandman over Chrimble. Fear Agent omni is the next big read on the list however.

The preachy criticism is mainly either his interviews/forewords, Animal Man and We3. The endless obscure references interfere with my enjoyment more often than the preachy stuff, just that which is really winds me up. I read about 3 of his Batman trades which were just ridiculously crammed with obscure references, didn't get along with the 1st 2 trades of New X-Men for similar reasons.

Apart from the excellent All Star Superman, there hasn't been anything I've been able to pick up by Morrison, and just enjoy. Animal Man is well-written, interesting and engaging, but incredibly preachy. We3 is really pretentious, and as I've said, the trades I've read of the 2 traditional comic protagonists I actually like were overly crammed with obscure references in a way that I found was excessively showing off what he's picking up from long-distant runs.

Season of Mists is number 4 and one of my favs. I love the way Sandman drifts between cohesive, long plots taking up the trade, retellings of classic tales with little cameos and short tales surrounding the mythos. Apart from the cluttered first trade the ebb and flow feels so natural.

First Saga trade arrived today so I'll be giving that a go soon, working through Hellblazer at the mo, reach the 3rd trade (going from the initial Delano run) and enjoying thoroughly. Recently read the latest Walking Dead trade and Sweettooth 5 so spent a fair whack recently. Might look into picking up another classic series in late January.

Anyone get Ramayan 3392AD - it's particularly stunning at present

...also thinking of ordering Grant Morrison's 18 Days (anyone read it - opinions?)

I had a quick look at some of the pages and it looks great but it's more of an art book as there's no story to it, it's just a collection of notes for a failed TV series pitch.

I'm aware of that and I've read the Mahabharata - I guess I should have said has anyone who has also read it seen the book - how big is it, how in depth is his character fleshing out etc?

Or should I just splash my dosh on 13 Coins?

The Walking Dead #114 was out today, absolutely fantastic the past 3 issues, this upcoming 12 issue arc of All Out War should be fantastic, 12 issues in 7 months. Come May I wonder what kind of story we'll be reading...

Never thought The Governor would be beaten, but he seems positively black and white to Negan's technicolour. Also, Paul is a BADASS.

Not a comic book, but I love the TV show Comic Book Men.

Best faux reality show. Ever.

(Thought this a better place than the "TV" thread).

I watch that, those guys did a podcast called Tell em Steve Dave before the show started so whenever I watch Comic Book Men I just wished it was longer as they have over gone over an hour bullying each other before and those are always the best parts for me.

    • Tbf that happened to me in 2022 so not a one off. 40 euros to drive down 3 streets. I'd have done a runner but the reason for getting the taxi in the first place is cos I couldn't walk no more.
    • I was fully prepared (waterproof jacket, extra pair of socks, foldable umbrella), but after four hours in the rain (from Geese through Oklou to Florence Road), it was just too much. Already at the hotel, let's hope tomorrow's better.
    • It’s rare that I watch question time, but I almost felt sorry for Kenyon, he seemed like a guy just brought off the street which effectively is what he was, made worse by the fact Burnham and the Tory guy were very strong debaters. I think Burnham was very aware not to go too hard on Kenyon and risk him getting sympathy, in fact he pretty much ignored him.
    • Shambles. Transport and comms garbage. Been looking forward to this since last June and have never been to a more disorganised festival in 30+ years.  Why we were told the whole festival was cancelled for the night if they had put back shows for a few hours?  Pissed off to say the very least and put a huge downer on the rest of the weekend.
    • Rotten communication. Actually god awful. Posting sporadically on IG, closing Mordor only to reopen and cause some serious carnage. Left the festival as it got too much for my 16year old daughter. She was devastated about Alex G and Mac…but TV girl could have saved it. Took us until 1220 and already home to find out they might/are playing. Pish.    and on another note, this festival has lost its bastard soul. Gone are the wee tents with local sellers selling vinyl, t shirts etc, now you can buy a 50 f**king eur official T-shirt. The ar*e is truely out of this event now. I went to Porto for the first time last year and it was fab. I love Barcelona and the line up is always stacked, but this festival is a corporate loss take. Hopefully a better day tomorrow.
