Yep, they could have got him in the summer for less.

But I do think that the ambition buying him now demonstrates is something that has a value of millions of pounds in itself. It'll make getting other players in the summer easier and cheaper, because they have the look of a club on the rise rather than on the slide.

But it's also been suggested that Liverpool got Torres to hold back his transfer request for a few days so that the Suarez deal could get sorted first, and Suarez might have insisted they went out and bought someone 'big' (lol - I don't mean that in a physical sense) as a replacement if he was going to complete the deal.

and although not ideal, they had suarez, kyut, ngog already with gerrard and merieles or even cole, to play in advanced roles

their not going to finish higher than 6th, or lower than 10th, so the seasons a bit of a right off, they could have got through with the players already mentioned, and put out the proper feelers for him, or pato, or gomez etc, for the next 5 months, and got a little more value for money

But given that he's done loads to delay it already, I can't see the courts being hugely accommodating if he tries to delay it any more.

If you look at the Carrol deal in isolation then it's a terrible deal and screams of panic buying. But I think Liverpool didin't expect to get what they did for Torres and Babbel. At the end of the day they replaced Babbel (who never played) and Torres with 2 quality strikers, basicaly a 2 for 1 deal which given the way Torres was playing and the fact that he had handed in a transfer request was a bloody good deal in the grand scheme of things.

Yup.

Liverpool basically were going to pay whatever. They had £25m more-or-less agreed apparently before Ashley suddenly put it up. But Henry didn't mind he just made Chelsea add the difference in the Torres deal. He said it could have been £25/£40m, £30/£45m etc. Up to Newcastle but Liverpool always wanted Carroll plus £15m for Torres. In effect Ashley ripped Chelsea off.

Saying that, I think Neil is right in the way he says it was also an important show of intention. Will be attractive to players to see a club act so decisively and without fear.

babel played loads more than you might think. I can't remember what the numbers were now, but they were stated in the reports when he left, and he'd played many more games than I'd have guessed. (From memory I think it might have been 86, but I might be wrong).

As for the price of Carroll, I read something where John Henry was saying the price they demanded for Torres was related to what they'd have to pay for Carroll - and that as far as everyone at LFC was concerned there had to be at least a £15M difference else Torres was going nowhere.

It's starting to look like they missed a big trick by not getting Sturrage as part of the deal tho. That's one they might come to regret.

I've not been to WHL, tho have visited a friend who lived within sight of the ground - and it's hardly the most accessible place in the world for tens of thousands to be coming in and out of on a regular basis, is it?

So I'd guess that the council are having to fend off locals objections at an even greater number of people coming and going, and the obligations they want to put on you are aimed at striking what they - and more importantly the locals - will accept as a reasonable balance for the hassle.

I realise that much of it is a lot like festivals, where locals object just cos locals will object - it's not like having a football ground nearby is a surprise to them. But it's also the case that footie matches are much more regular than a festival, and that you're wanting a significant shift upwards in numbers too.

If you compare WHL with Ashburton Grove, then it's more than reasonable to say that AG's accessibility is hugely greater.

I know that AG had the council compulsory purchase, but isn't that the case for Spurs plans too? From the little I know of the plans for there, the new stadium is being built just to the side of the old, isn't it? And that's currently streets of terraced housing?

Isn't it right that a major advantage that Arsenal had over you was land that was in need of redevelopment, while there's sod all you've been able to find near you?

And finally, the richer the man, the shrewder and harder negotiating that man is likely to have needed to be to get that rich (I'm talking Joe, not his monkey). Which gets to mean that it's quite likely that the reports you're getting of what a bastard the council are being is somehow a result of his negotiating position. Cos if you take a hardnosed position, then it's quite likely that the other side does too.
