I think Rooney was considering a move to Newcastle at the time too. I think a large part of it was about the money.

If, like Manchester United did do, a club attracts players by offering more money and the promise of trophies, then that same club can't really complain when those same players look to move for more money when another club can offer them that and - possibly - a more realistic chance of winning more trophies several years later.

Well f**k him then he can go to City Man U. Ronaldo didnt leave for money, he gave Utd another season of full commitment even though he wanted to go to Real. When Fergie Moyes didnt let him go he had a quick tantrum and then got on with it. Rooney will never feel "home" anywhere else, he plays off passion and confidence. If he goes to City Man United he may win the league and maybe more, but its to escape the shitstorm hes in at the moment and to earn more money, like most of Citys Man Us players, not because he wants to play for them. Fair play to him.

From an Irish point of view, I wish Paul McGrath stayed with St Pats in Dublin, Roy Keane stayed with Cobh and Robbie Keane stayed with Crumlin Utd. They all would’ve had to work jobs though and wouldn’t have realized their potential, but the 50 people that turn up to the games on Sunday would’ve been happy.

What century do you think it is up in Scotland?

the Newcastle bid was arranged by his agent to force man utd to bid, as mentioned above utd were going to wait also to see how his injury cleared up

laughing all the way to the bank ;)

however i do agree that his salary demands are a cover for other reasons wanting to leave.

I think moving to spain will do him some good

We’re forgetting the real reason here for the “fall out”. I don’t think it originally had anything to do with money. Rooney was caught red handed bagging prostitutes while his missus was preggers. His reaction to this was to get an injunction against the press from reporting it, telling his missus to “deal with it”, start to play shit on the pitch for both Utd and England, take up smoking, (20 a day on his holidays apparently) drinking heavily and pissing on the street, defying his manager by saying “I don’t know” or whatever about the ankle, and now saying he wants to leave, despite 3 months ago saying he’ll never leave, or play for City.

whoaaa!

He was playing shit long before any of that came out.

Just thought I'd correct that part. :)

I have always thought that rooney was a little bit overhyped but I see no problem with rooney asking for whatever wages he wants. The majority of the other man utd players would ask for the same if they had rooneys market value. He isnt from manchester and never supported them as a boy, so why would people think he would never want to leave. If he can get bumper pay packet good luck to him, I am happy in my current job but if another one offered me double wages I would gladly leave.

But you dont have 80,000 people chanting your name and wearing jerseys with your name on it every weekend do you?

I felt the same when Beckham left Madrid for money. He had 80,000 fans chanting his name every week, was really loved at the club, was playing with the best players in the world at the worlds most famous club and left for L.A. I remember thinking: Why in the name of God would he leave that, when hes already worth tens of millions??!!!

I do think that something like this has been coming for a while now. I know that your club policy is to wait until they reach the final year of their contract before renegociating. I can see how this will save cash, but always has the potential to go wrong. It almost did with Vidic and now could go wrong with Rooney. Part of the problem is that it's hard to see United remaining at the same level without serious investment, and you just can't see that coming. With Rooney approaching what should be his peak period, he's not going to want to commit long term unless he's sure he'll be challenging for honours. Until it's clear how Giggs and Scholes will be replaced, would you want to tie your future to the club?

AT Arsenal, we've put in place a policy of tieing players down to long term contracts in order to avoid what's happening to you. Although it sets us up for a higher cost base, it does give a lot more protection in terms of getting money back. You do have to wonder how much United could really get for Rooney now. In january he'd be cup tied so only really Man City would be interested at that stage. Come the summer, with only a year to go, who's going to pay a fortune when they know he'd be available on a free the following year? To me, if you can really believe what's being said in the press, then he's got you over a barrel in terms of his wage demands.

I disagree thats the sole reason. Theres benefits there, no doubt. Park had a great last season for PSV, really good, and was bought for 4 million. Hes also captain of South Korea.

Nakamura was a great buy for Celtic. Good free kick taker and scored some important goals.

I understand your point, and maybe signing these players means the club don’t have to go on as many Asian tours to bulk up the brand, but I think, in most case and especially at good clubs like Utd and Celtic, football comes first.

True yeah but the prostitute thing happened last Xmas, which is when he took out the injunction so its been hanging over his head for a while. The ankle injury vs Bayern, it started to go downhill then. By the time he’d recovered from that, he knew the facts were going to come out at some stage about his private life.

As I said, its more his reaction to it that Fergie is pissed off about. And now all of a sudden Rooney says hes leaving for money. Not because Fergie has bollocked him out of it for the last 6 months and Rooney isn’t intelligent enough to realise he needs to make amends somehow!!??

Fergies press conference is on at 2pm.

I dont think any team would chuck in any old player just to boost shirt sales, the player must be able to 'hold their own' so to speak - park and nakamura can do this, sames as lee for bolton

I cant think of any asian player that has really struggled, but the team kept playing them because of their popularity

I dont see that man utd fans are any more passionate or special than any other teams fans. If he is good enough then he can have thousands of another team fans calling his name. He has won everything at man utd, whats left to prove. I see nothing wrong with him wanting comparible wages to john terry when his brand is far bigger. Of course he is being greedy but most other big premiership players could still lead the life of luxury for 50k a week less so they are no different.

while I know the prossie thing was before last xmas, are you sure the injunction goes a way back too? How?

As far as I'm aware, any injunction would have been taken out no earlier than the end of last season, tho I'm of the belief that Rooney's injunction was actually a lot more recent than that (done at some point after England came back from SA).

    • I really like the Cheap Thrills! I saw them at the Ruby Lounge in Manchester in January at one of Chris Hawkins' "Awesome Friends" nights (which i think is why I even got tickets as it wasn't listed as a Cheap Thrills show!). Very good live and some great songs. I would've gone Saturday if I'd planned ahead!
    • They also seem to be in a mission to break the US with their new major label and this latest LP   Mid afternoon, live streamed on Disney+ is arguably a much bigger gig than Kendal Calling, if they had to skip one
