Gone off Indie

If by "Indie" you mean the class of 2005-2007, i.e. the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Fratellis, Killers and the slew of sub-Libertines glottal pop like Scousing for Girls, Pigeon Defectives, Paddingtons, Holloways, Highbury and Islingtons etc etc then yes they're mostly gone and good riddance. Indie for me died the day Sam's Town came out.

The only band from that era who have emerged with dignity intact and potential for longevity are Kasabian. Certainly the only band from that era whose third album I could be bothered to buy - most I even gave up before the second.

I'm just glad I'm not the only one who can't stand them - was begininng to think I was the only one in fact. Saw them at Rock En Seine 4 years ago after Richard Ashcroft pulled out - did nothing for me. And then saw the end of their set (not intending to I may add) at Glasto last year - absolutely terrible. It's really stange that mainstream bands like Editors (to name one example) suffer a bit of a backlash, when - despite their flaws - they are a lot more exciting and better live than Kasabian.

There are plenty of bands out there doing new and interesting stuff but checking stuff out based on someone else's ill-advised catch-all 'genres' isn't gonna get you very far. If you walk into HMV or wherever and look in the 'indie' section you're probably gonna find loads of bands whose only common trait is not being in the top 40.

Get yourself on last.fm and make sure you set it up to submit all your listens - from your iPod or portable music player as well as whatever media player you use. Use it properly - the more it knows about your listening habits, the more accurate its suggestions are gonna be.

Personally I think Kasabian are excellent , they have that swagger that a lot of bands do not and

they have been developing with each album and it seems the next one will be Pink Floyd ish and I

cannot wait to here it.

Kasabian trying to be 'Pink Floydish'?!:lol:

Funniest thing I've ever heard on this forum. That's like Wayne Rooney donning a tutu and dancing with the Royal Ballet. It wouldn't work, and would be a quite hideous sight.

Hells Bells not another Band of Bells. We've got Howling Bells, Broken Bells, Trembling Bells... I'm getting tinnitus just thinking about it.

It's like all the Wolf bands at the moment - joining Wolfmother are Wolf People, Lone Wolf, Wolf Parade...

Maybe they should all get together and form a huge band called Wolf Bells.

Hurrah for all the Kasabian naysayers! Banter, we love it.

I still think they put on a good live show, and are certainly better live than on record. Not sure if I'd bother to see them live any more though (a) as I've seen them enough times and (B) there's more than enough fresh new stuff around these days to keep me otherwise occupied.

And I also think the Floyd comparison is a bit much. Everything is relative, and nobody has produced music of that quality for many a year. But at least Kasabian have a go.

Editors have gone right downhill in my opinion, I've listened to the new album and it might as well have been Depeche Mode. Have they had their guitars stolen?

There's a mixture this year. Using the term broadly, a few examples in my opinion...

Ace 'indie'; The XX, Phoenix, Foals, The National, Grizzly Bear, Broken Social Scene, Vampire Weekend, Beach House, Tegan & Sara, Dirty Projectors

Landfill 'indie'; The Cribs, Bombay Bicycle Club, We Are Scientists, The Courteeners, Editors, Mumford & Sons, Jamie T, Ash

Oh look another "my taste in music is better than your taste in music" thread ...... just what I've been waiting for.

Check out Terry and the Teatowels, I believe they're playing by the bins next to the noodle bar in west holts on Sunday morning. The next Stone Roses ..... mind you when they get popular I'll drop them like a bad habit.

Peace out y'all. B)

Taste is like opinion. Massively subjective.

But, to the OP...

I also sort of fell out of love with indie as far as the soundalike bands coming through that seemed to be EMI sending graduates to jarvis cocker's wardrobe department. That isn't to say that THAT is indie anyhow, as far as I'm concerned, which is more about how you got your music out than how you dress or whether you have a guitar.

Good new music is still coming through, I'm older now and less of it is for me, but I'm sure there is still great stuff in there for the generation it's aimed at. Personally this year I have loved the mumfords album, dubFX, dizzee's latest offering, plastic beach and a few singles, so it hasn't been bad considering only 5 full months have passed, as far as I'm concerned.

TBH, I think trying to categorise music is almost impossible. Indie to me means the 80's stuff that wasn't cheesy shite and on independent label. It obviously doesn't mean that to people now from reading this thread.

BUT I do realise that there are a lot of acts who have been spawned and died in recent years who fit a stereotype that Radio 1 call Indie and most of them are utter revolting foetid shite.

I think I stuck up a similar point on another thread, but the style of music, the instruments or manner or equipment on which it is composed and performed and the label it get's stuck with by DJ's and Journos means nothing. You hear it and it's good or it isn't. Anyone looking through my iTunes library would think it was put together by a committee as there's Iron Maiden, High Contrast, RATM, Doves, A Camp, Laura Marling, Corinne Bailey Rae, Elbow, Therapy?, Basement Jaxx, Magic Numbers, REM, NWA, Pendulum, Local Natives, The Rifles, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, The Beatles, The Bees, La Roux, Depeche Mode, Little Richard, Madness, The Specials, The Bluetones, Reef, Eurythmics, Ice Cube, etc etc. It couldn't really be more varied but I love all of it. If I don't love it , I don't buy it or I delete it.

I do however draw the line at what people call RNB these days (which isn't Rhythm & Blues) as it's all w*nk. Oh, and any opera, showtunes or anything from musicals. Just no.

Are there bands out there who sound great, original and inspiring and with some thing more to say than I do want to have sex with you or I dont want to have sex with you?

And who will go into the music hall of fame from this last decade too?

:( #

PS Im usually an optimist!

    • Been last time in 2018 when the festival was happening in parque Bela vista. ls the new location good for such a big festival? What's the temperature in the evening near Tejo? Should we bring a raincoat or a jacket?

    • Chemical Brothers? All for it cause they’re phenomenal live but struggle to see how they’d go down. Would anticipate Chase and Status/Prodigy coming back at some point though.
