Problem is that in the era of X-Factor/Pop Idol etc. that chart success and huge sales bear absolutely no relation to the quality of the work, it's about how it's marketed to the gullible, fast food eating TV junkie idiots. There is ALWAYS great music about, but in dark times as these you have to look harder.

In terms of acts with longevity and quality from recent times I'd probably single out Doves. Great great songs with depth and feeling, created with craft and guile by people who know how to write, perform and produce outstanding music. I'm as surprised now as I was when their debut album came out that they aren't mega-star popular.
