Actually, in the last 10 years or so, many of the bands I've discovered have come to my attention as support acts. For example, my beloved Decemberists supported Cake on their last visit to the UK ages ago, and I've followed them ever since.

It has shows based around the line-ups of a number of fests, so pick a fest which has some bands you know and like, and listen in to hear tracks as well from the bands that are playing that you don't yet know.

No-one has mentioned Wild Beasts so far - a British guitar band that have huge potential I think. Playing the JP stage. Very interesting lyrically, though the singer's falsetto might not be to some tastes. Last album Two Dancers is amazing.

Since we're defying categorizations, can I recommend Sleigh Bells. I don't know what the hell you'd say they were other than an absolute riot and the album's out in July

Band Of Skulls were excellent when I went to see them a few weeks ago - they're one to look out for.

There never was a need to restrict yourself to one genre.

But it's still useful to be able to label things, just as a communication aid.

If I tell you The Decemberists are folky American indie with a prog influence in the later albums, that's a lot more helpful to you than "just listen to it and find out".

If by "Indie" you mean the class of 2005-2007, i.e. the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Fratellis, Killers and the slew of sub-Libertines glottal pop like Scousing for Girls, Pigeon Defectives, Paddingtons, Holloways, Highbury and Islingtons etc etc then yes they're mostly gone and good riddance. Indie for me died the day Sam's Town came out.

The only band from that era who have emerged with dignity intact and potential for longevity are Kasabian. Certainly the only band from that era whose third album I could be bothered to buy - most I even gave up before the second.

If you limit yourself to just indie guitar bands , from my experience it seems like you get 1 great year with 2 or 3 outstanding bands and then it 2 , 3 or more years of 'landfill' indie:D (that's a great term for it , whoever came up with it!) until your good bands release other albums .

If you don't fill in the sparse years with other stuff , it's a long , long wait .

Hells Bells not another Band of Bells. We've got Howling Bells, Broken Bells, Trembling Bells... I'm getting tinnitus just thinking about it.

It's like all the Wolf bands at the moment - joining Wolfmother are Wolf People, Lone Wolf, Wolf Parade...

Maybe they should all get together and form a huge band called Wolf Bells.

I'd say you couldn't get any more bog-standard dross-laden land fill than these cretins. Except they plug themselves more than a lonely nun with a cucumber. Publicity shots of them wearing England shirts on stage in France, anyone? Ruining that otherwise fine Carlsberg advert?

They're a stain not just on the music industry, but all over the media in general because of their persistant need to whore themselves all over the f**king show.

The best indie bands are probs Half Japanese and The Brian Jonestown Massacre.

IMO Indie is an abbreviation (sp?) for Indipendant Record Labels. Not a genre.
