Gone off Indie

There is plenty of great music in the UK even excluding Blur/Oasis/Kasabian clones...

Laura Marling

Emmy The Great

Slow Club

Blood Red Shoes

I LIKE TRAINS

Editors

Foals

These New Puritans

The Boxer Rebellion

Los Camp

To name but 10...

Although I do tend to agree that US / Eurozone music has improved considerably, whereas we've been stuck in 1995 (in the mainstream)

Arcade Fire

That National

Beach House

Cold Cave

Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Joanna Newsom

Warpaint

Soap&Skin

Scary Mansion

Zola Jesus

First ten that came to my head (probably as listened to them very recently) - new / indie / alternative music, whatever you want to call it, is in my opinion better than ever.

Is this the same Joy Formidable I know?!! I don't think TJF particuarly have the indie kids raving, more like the 40's demographic. I've seen them about 15 times and I think they are the one of the most exciting live acts today... I think their EP is great, but live they are even better - I'm shocked you've seen so many disagree but I'm perfectly acceptable to different strokes for different folks... Good job it's a big festival site!

I doubt there's two bands with the same name. :P

I didn't actually say that TJF had the indie kids raving about them, but they're defo a band that do have people raving about them, as you get to show. Yet I could (well, if we could time travel :P) show you 3,000+ people who would wonder why, and that's just from one show! There were perhaps 150 people loving them, while the rest were bored beyond belief.

It's of course possible that it was their worst show ever, or that they're an act best suited to a room for no more than 300. I'm simply saying my opinion, and the very obvious opinion of the majority of the others there watching them (mostly an 'adult' audience BTW, rather than teenagers).

I will give a little back their way, and say that the audience reaction probably wasn't much helped by that stage at that fest having served up too many dreadful bands over the weekend, and that perhaps myself and the rest of the crowd lumped them together with those others, and didn't give them as much of a chance as we might have done otherwise.

But it's still not the case that they were great, because they just weren't. I've got more than enough experience to know a great band when I see one, even if they're not to my own tastes.

Their biggest show to date was at the Electric Ballroom

that's wrong you know. They've played bigger shows, such as the one I saw at a fest (which i'm not going to name cos of some of what I've said, and the fact I know of the offence those cause the organiser [been there and done that already, he gets very upset]).

'Very true. Particularly the comment about Los Campesinos. They are completely different from their peers and should be praised for it. Rather, they receive little airplay and not much publicity. Shame'

Los Camp's latest album is f**king insane

Can people stop grouping all music as indie. The xx for example are not indie, its just slow depressing garbage.

I think the worst thing to happen for a lot of these indie bands was Oasis quitting. As they all then came out saying how they were going to fill the hole left by them only to fall flat with average second albums (Enemy, Courteeners).

Also music as most things in life goes in trends. In a couple of years people will be saying there is too much indie and not enough electro

radio 1 are to blame for all this shite that gets churned out!

jo wiley thinks she is doing us a favour by letting us know about these so called next big things. the only way she could do me a favour would be to f**k off and die!!

    • No worries, it's a perfectly fair question to ask. I would expect people to be talking at the back & near the bars & that is where I would want them to be talking. If your group are enjoying yourselves & the music & briefly chatting to say how much you are loving a certain song etc, you would be an ideal group to stand behind.   My issue is with people having full blown conversations (usually unrelated what is on the stage) whilst being surrounded by people who are trying to listen to the music. This was happening in the middle and towards the front of all stages, & so you have limited options to move around & you may have spent 20 minutes waiting for the band trying to get the closest position that you can. If there's a group of 8 people, there may be 2 or 3 that like the band & the rest will start talking if the music isn't their thing. This may be the norm now for festivals, and if it is, that's ok & I will focus on a band's own gigs & UK based new music festivals.    I'm also not including consequences of my own decision making. I saw Geese on Wednesday so went to Occident after Men I Trust finished so it was understandable there would be chatting that far back. Similarly, getting to The XX after Olivia Rodrigo along with most of the site, I knew my chance of a good spot & a chat-free zone had gone so that was completely reasonable.   PS. I went to Bilbao BBK in 2023 & 2025 & enjoyed it. For Pulp & Kylie in 2025, I got a position early & was surrounded by a respectful & fun crowd for both. The UK non-headlining bands tend to go on the undercover 3rd stage, & most people like to congregate outside so you can usually get close to the front of that stage.
    • Interview on 6 music earlier, was going to get the album to have a listen, but comes out the day they play the festival
    • Additional dates added already
    • I feel like it's not COMPLETELY beyond the realm of possibility that they could headline but I just don't see it.    They're not doing anything other than headlining. So nah, I don't see it.
    • Consider that the sound quality can be better near the front bars right behind the soundbooth rather than closer to the stage, like with mbv. And of course, the front sections are full of talkers too.   The most courteous move would be to have conversations in the very back of the field.
