Metallica

People initially thought they might have headlined this year after Lars stating he wanted to play, and some people are predicting them for next year. I'd love this to happen as they're an incredible live band and their show at Leeds last year was the best performance at any festival I'd been to. The other times they've played Reading and Leeds, as well as Download I've heard barely anything negative about.

However, Glasto has a slightly different audience to R/L and Download, in that they're not as heavy music-oriented (not to generalise) and Glasto itself rarely books metal acts. So because of this, I feel that maybe if Metallica were booked to headline it may generate controversy in the press. But on the other hand, I think they would go down greatly with the majority of the audience due to their stunning show and great crowd interaction. After all, Jay Z's performance is said to have been one of the best headlining shows in Glasto history.

So if Metallica headlined next year, how well do you feel they would go down?

I thought the reason we didn't have "heavier" bands playing Glasto, was due to a decision made after the Roskilde tragedy?

I'm sure there are plenty Glasto-goers who would love a bit of metal, but it was never going to happen after that particular declaration. I'm not sure Eavis is in a position to reverse that decision just yet..

love it to happen I'd go see them. They had enter shikari and Brand new this year who I know arn't many peoples taste's (myself included) but are definitely heavier

and how can I forget f**ked up! there was plenty of people to see them so no reason metal wouldn't work.

there didnt seem to be that big a crowd at leeds last year though, which in theory is a more Metal orientated festival, cant imagine the pyramid would be exactly heaving, would be happy if they played, would they consider dropping to other stage headliner maybe?

Would probably gather a fair bit of publisity, being a metal band at Glasto, so you'd probably see a fair few interested people there ala Jay-Z, not on the same scale mind. Fantastic live band, not even a huge fan of their music.

Ah come on! Have any of the "dream" headliners released great stuff recently? Macca, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Oasis, Bowie, The Who, The Stones etc.

But they'd still be good wouldn't they?

Except for Oasis, Pink Floyd, The Who and Led Zeppelin who are shit. Oh and Macca who is both shit and a c**t.

Id go and see them for definite, being a massive metallica and metal/grunge fan as an early teen (to put it into context I also saw Jay-z last year being a massive hip hop fan now! :) )

There does need to be a little bit more heavier music at glastonbury. Its the one sort of music that isnt really catered for as far as I can see. I saw them at Reading last year and they were awesome as always.

As someone said they may need to recreate their S & M album for glastonbury, but I hope thats not the case.

Just imagine how good Nothing Else Matters, and Master of Puppets for example would sound on the Pyramid?

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
    • Easily my favourite set of the day.
