It is possible to disagree with someone without ridiculing them. It's nothing to do with stifling or limiting discussion and everything to do with encouraging balanced, reasonable, fair expression.

While I agree with that, there's often also an amount of fair comment that gets considered insults or ridicule by the person they're responding to (I'm talking generally now, not necessarily specifically about this thread).

It seems that in the modern world, fair comment is often considered wrong. For example, when in Tesco's earlier today I was considering their "our staff have the right to be treated with respect" signs, which don't take into account any view of any customer that a staff member might not be treating them with the respect they think they're similarly entitled to .... or as another example, call centre staff saying you're being disrespectful and hanging up because telling them that their company has made an error which the numpty on the phone is too daft to recognise as an error is wrong.

It's certainly the case that particular Glasto staff could consider the OP's starting comment for this thread to not be balanced, reasonable or fair expression, and therefore disrespectful. The reason why this would be the case in certain parts of that first post would be due to the (not meant as an insult) ignorance of the OP.

Bullying, bad bahaviour and ill will are obviously all about tone and language.

Given some of the language used its absolutley clear that the OP has been subject to ill will and this may well have gone as far as bullying. Calling someone insane does not contribute to any form of sensible debate. To dress it up as 'opinion' is disingenuous.

The way people seem to change their persona the minute they get behind the silly computer when you may have met the antagonisers in person only a week or so ago and they were nice, normal and polite is tbh quite shocking tho...

As HuggyHare says it's easy to sit back and do nothing, IMO apathy is major problem in this day and age. Whilst I don't think that a boycott is the way to go and I don't agree with all the points you have raised, I admire your enthusiasm to try and make things better.

Here's a few of my ideas to help tackle the abandoned tents problem ......

I think the major problem with the tent donation scheme in 2007 was that it was poorly promoted, it required people to pack up their tents and then carry them to a drop off point that was potentially a long trek with all their gear (that is if they even knew where the drop off point was).

Someone mentioned campsite crews acting as collection points, I think this is an excellent idea and would mean that you would never be too far from a drop off point.

Obviously people should be encouraged to at least dismantle and pack away their own tents, but we all know that there are plenty of people who won't. One of the issues people have mentioned on other threads, is people taking mistakenly abandoned tents etc, that the owners were intending to collect on their 2nd trip to the car. Maybe a simple and easy solution would be for everyone to be given a sticker/label with their program. Attaching it to a tent could indicate that it had been donated and was in good working order. Meaning that anyone who wanted to help out could easily identify which tents to take.

I didn't leave the site until Monday evening, as I wanted to be in a fit state to drive and avoid the traffic queues. I would have been happy to spend a few hours checking and dismantling tents, if I knew that it was going to help clean up the site and benefit a charity. Although in the minority, I'm sure I'm not alone on this one.

Cleaning the tents has been mentioned as the major cost and logistical problem in all this. How about charities are offered packed up tents to take away, they could sort out their own volunteers to clean them off site. Perhaps allocating a charity to each campsite crew ? They could then be sold in charity shops, car boot sales, ebay etc to raise funds.

By no means do I think this would work perfectly but it could at least make a difference.

Fine if some of you don't agree, maybe you could give some constructive comments and between us we could try and find a workable solution to put forward to GFL ? Just because it's been tried once and failed doesn't mean a better solution can't be found, that is a very defeatist attitude.

The behaviour of some folk towards fellow Efesters is discussed pretty openly between Efesters in person, via MSN + FB, via PM and so on in the real world...again not a crime. Some folk cant handle it, thats fine but there are plenty of us that can take the verbal beatings...and we all know that text never comes across as what we meant to say and then we all get the wrong end of the stick and silliness ensues in this usually fluffy place. We all judge each other for what you all read in front of your faces and misjudge each other...its the nature of the beast.

Just remember one and all that we are real human beings behind these damn computers...that avatar and username is just a front for each and every one of us...and one we can all hide behind at times and be damn silly towards each other. None of us would ever have the guts to do this to each others faces would we at the G, Glade, Reading, the pub...wherever? Well I dont believe we would.

I for one dont go on here to lord it over people even though so many of you think I do...that is just fecking stupid and ignorant imo. What I find amazing is how immediately people get insulted for saying something disagreeable. For me to think someone is a c**t or to think someone is an idiot they have to do multiple things wrong. But one word out of place and people get labelled those things. Are these empty insults or do people genuinely think that of a person after one wrong thing said?

So actually reading all of this stupid thread I have still got the same thought as when I started.

Why would anyone want to pick up litter for £6.30 an hour, it hardly screams out best job in the world does it???? If you are willing to pimp yourself out to a crappy job like this for such low pay then you surely cannot have a high value to your own self worth.

If you are doing it to make you feel good, then please find another way to improve the world. If you are truly hard up & this is the only way you can make some money then I am sorry for you, but please do not come on a festival messageboard whining about the poor conditions or treatment, I am sure there are far worse jobs.

I was at the site 2 weeks before the festival & I talked to to some of the workers, all I spoke to where very happy working at the festival & many also had repeatedly worked at the festival. If the festival is that bad to work for why would people do it over & over again???

People going on about the killing that could be made by recycling tents, well I am sorry but back in the real world, if you where a charity looking to place a bulk order, you could purchase new tents far cheaper than it would cost to collect, repair, pack old buggered dirty tents from Glastonbury or any other festival site for that matter.

Glastonbury is no worse than say Leeds, Reading or V, I would go as far to say that Glastonbury is possibly the least dumped on festival because of its attendees democgraphic.

I love the festival & abhor the shocking amount of rubbish dumped & I did take all my stuff home with me, we have used our tent for 19 festivals now since 1999 & it is still going strong & will be at V this year.

Walking around the site on Monday I was surprised at how quick the site had been tidied up already, the pyramid area was nearly spotless.
