Oh, and i should have declared my stance:-

I saw Bruce at Cardiff last year, my first time. I only knew 3 or 4 of the numbers he played - but I thought the gig and atmosphere was tremendous, such energy. And yes, it was around 3 1/2 hours.

Loved it all

Notes:

This is the fourth volume of the Cautious Man Mixes.

Originally, I planned to make Volume 4 of the Cautious Man Mixes another acoustic outing by covering the Devils & Dust Tour. Then, a little thing called life got in the way which delayed me in getting anything done with it. Then, Bruce announces a new album and tour (how dare he!) and then

the official announcement comes that Dan Federici is battling cancer, and is stepping away from the band to seek treatment. All these factors together motivated me to rethink my choice of what Volume 4 should be, and so I chose to do something I've tried doing repeatedly over the past 5 years and

never got it to my satisfaction. I set out to put together a compilation of the holy grail of Springsteen tours, the 1978 Darkness Tour, in spite of a serious lack of time with the holiday season upon us.

Although there is a lack of shows from this tour available in high quality audio, the ones that are out there, like the "Fab Five" Radio Broadcasts (Roxy, Agora, Passaic, Atlanta & Winterland) are SO good that to chose between them is like splitting hairs. Everyone has their own favorites from this era of Bruce, and can present an argument as to why their favorite is "the best." One thing that is certain, in my mind anyway, there has not been more fierce performances from Bruce and the band before or after the Darkness Tour-the shows are a perfect example of rock and roll personified. The living, breathing essence of pure rock fury and blistering soul. The tempos were faster, the guitars rocked harder, the performances so exhilarating that it seemed like Bruce may have very well been living out his final moments right there on stage, and was hell bound on making it the greatest moment of his life (and yours). If there is one tour (and album) that I can say without hesitation is MY favorite, and which locked me into a permanent and frenzied fascination with Bruce Springsteen's music, it is Darkness On The Edge Of Town and the tour that accompanied the record

in 1978. This compilation includes EVERY song from the Darkness album, an album of pure perfection.

So, here it is-after much deliberation and constant re-editing and tinkering (some of which began 5 years ago)-my version of highlights from the Darkness Tour. I put it that way as to avoid calling it "the best" of the 1978 tour, as that's near impossible to say. But these are some of my "desert island" favorites, in the order that I usually ended up listening to them before this full compilation existed. I'm sure most folks already have the full shows that these clips have been taken from, or maybe you've already put together your own 1978 compilation. I hope all who listen to this collection get as much joy out of it as I do, now that I'm finally satisfied with the results.

I've always loved the way Bruce chose classic covers to pepper the show, and I've included several of those nuggets here. I'm also a huge fan of the lead-in building up to She's The One, whether it be Mona, Not Fade Away, or Gloria. Here, as I could not chose one over another, so I have mixed 2 versions together to create a "She's The One Medley" which is actually made up of Mona/Preacher's Daughter from the Winterland Show (12/15/78 and Gloria/She's The One from the Atlanta show (9/30/78. Prove It All Night may SOUND better on some of the other tapes from the tour, but I challenge anyone to find a more hell-raising, spine-tingling guitar solo by Bruce than the one I included here from Atlanta. Then there is the guitar blow-out of Because The Night from the Agora, which can invoke seizures to those predisposed to such things! The dialogue in Growin' Up

from the Agora is also classic vintage Bruce, and hilarious to boot. Badlands and Darkness from Passaic are downright vicious in their intensity, as is Streets Of Fire from Portland's Paramount Theatre. I'm also especially partial to the Saginaw, Michigan show from Sept. 3, which I think could get

my "show of the tour" nod, but that audience recording is plagued with some overly enthusiastic audience members, not that I can blame them. I included Bruce's introduction to Factory from that show, a personal highlight when Bruce addresses his father and "those loud f**king machines!" The Roxy show was also more than impressive, but due to the large amount of material officially released from that show, I have not included much of it here. The tour also boasted some fine early versions of songs which would later end up on The River (as well as Tracks), represented here by Point Blank, The Ties That Bind, and a terrific Rendezvous. And let us also not forget Santa, Rosie, the "birthday party" at the Passaic (Bruce's 29th), or the classic segue of Racing In The Street into Thunder Road for that matter!

As I have said, arguments can be made as to which show or which particular version of a song was the best on this tour, but I'm sure a lot of folks would agree this was Bruce and the band and one of the highest, if not THE highest, peaks of their career. Also, with the sad news of Danny's illness, I could think of no better way to honor him and wish him well than by celebrating the music and performances that have galvanized an army of Bruce fanatics. His signature organ is all over these songs, and it is a testament to the greatness he has brought to Bruce's sound for more than 30 years. Get well, Danny, I wish you all the best. And I wish you all a happy & safe holiday season. Cherish those people and moments that are precious to you-you never know how long you've got or how long it willl last.

So now, crack open some cold ones, and bootleggers out there in radioland, ROLL YOUR TAPES!!!

As the great Kid Leo said, "Round for round, pound for pound, there ain't no finer band around...

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN & THE E STREET BAND!"

---thecautiousman, December 2007

No lossy sources were used in the making of this compilation. Whenever possible, original silver CDs were used. The master mix was done the old fashioned way, on analog equipment, which I feel gives the songs a "warmer" sound.

Torrent includes artwork, flac fingerprints, and EAC log files.

Lineage: Original Silver CDs & Flac/Shn Downloads burned to TDK CD-Rs with EAC>Yamaha and JVC DVD/SACD players>Yamaha Mixing Console for mixing/EQ adjustments/mastering>Pioneer component Burner>TDK Master CD-R>EAC>Flac Frontend Level 8>YOU!

A HUGE thank you to RADIOLAND, the tapers, remaster "labels" and uploaders of the following shows, who made this possible:

5/31/1978 Music Hall Boston, MA

6/16/1978 Memorial Hall Kansas City, MO

7/7/1978 The Roxy Los Angeles, CA

8/9/1978 The Agora Cleveland, OH

9/3/1978 Civic Center Saginaw, MI

9/19/1978 Capitol Theater Passaic, NJ

9/21/1978 Capitol Theater Passaic, NJ

9/30/1978 Fox Theatre Atlanta, GA

12/15/1978 Winterland San Francisco, CA

12/19/1978 Paramount Theatre Portland, OR

Stay tuned for the next installment in the series!

This set is dedicated to Dan "The Phantom" Federici-Get Well Soon, Danny!

Happy Holidays to all from "The Cautious Man!"

Of course the 70` was Bruce`s golden years, no way around that fact.

BUT!!! Bruce is still the best live act out there. Rolling Stones rated him number one for 2008, I don know how much that is worth?

If you want a bootleg from this summer check this out, f*** breath taking!!!

Gothenburg, Sweden 5 July 2008, Ullevi

    • Yet again we’re missing the WH Sunday reggae slot
    • Occident has got larger over the years and there's relatively little overlap with mbv and OR fans that I think it would work fine as it would divide the crowd so effectively.   They don't even need to give the biggest stage from an optics perspective either, this would be billed as a secret short set and used to promote her new album.
    • Really like this! Few artists a bit low I reckon like the Reytons, Yard Act, the Royston Club and Florence Road but I’d absolutely take this!
    • Yeah Olivia Rodrigo walked right past me when leaving the crowd during The Cure set.   I had to escape where I was in the crowd so was just chilling in the bottom left corner when she walked through with a couple of others.    Thought it was her or someone who looked incredibly like her but no-one else seemed to pick up on it, either not bothered or just too engrossed in their own conversations to not notice..
    • Why?   It’s all made up nonsense, an illusion for the masses.   Who do we owe these numbers on a server to, and how will they collect them?
