Well, this goes back to the old question with secret slots - why would Wilco be kept secret?

Well same for Geese. One of the most hyped bands out there, playing two festivals the week before. Touring like Bob Dylan this year. Not much of a surprise either really. Actually, the only surprise now would be if its not them.

I guess its like most surprise things - birthday parties, presents, dates - a triumph of lowered expectation.

Model/Actriz have been announced for Edinburgh Psych Fest on the Sunday.

Oh good. Saw them a few months ago. Lots of fun. Pity they'll get stuck in the tent.

Bill Callahan would be sensational. I had to leave early on the Sunday the year he played - 2017 I think?

Would love Lael Neale as have never managed to see her despite loving her last 3 albums (haven't heard the debut). And Model/Actriz and Allah Lahs would be good additions as well if those all come to pass.

Ty Segall, Anna von Hausswolff, Snuggle, S.G. Goodman and Sex Mask are playing Manchester Psych on EOTR Saturday, as well as Model/Actriz, Allah-Las and Ghostwoman who we already knew were in the country that weekend. The Mystery Lights and Lael Neale are playing all three Psych Fests that weekend, though that doesn't rule them out of Thursday just yet.

Ty Sgeall would be so sick. Surely EOTR can't keep us waiting too much longer for the next announcement?

He played to a very small crowd (acoustic granted) in 2024.

The surprise is Geese, it is not Wilco.

Stereolab are far too big to play without headlining.

Stereolab can only play on Thursday as they are doing all three Psych fests. In fact they are not headlining Manchester they are sub.

Imagine if for that reason Stereolab are the secret headliner! A bigger surprise now would be Geese and Cameron being in the main lineup announcement.

My latest theory is Public Service Broadcasting. The Ally Pally show is 2 weeks later and in the FAQs Willgoose is vague about other shows, and repeats the need to sell out Ally Pally to not lose money. Keep the EOTR set a secret to ensure some of us don’t just see them at EOTR. Also got history at the festival. I’ll be trying in the presale for Ally Pally either way, it’s going to be epic 🙂

Just remember, everybody, we've still got seven months of "it can't be Geese, it must be (artist there would be no reason to keep secret)" to go.

The clue is in the thread title!

So lets continue speculating.

I wish we had SFA but presumably they would favour Green Man for their comeback and more critically, surely they are too big for the Thursday slot.

They have categorically said they have no further Welsh dates beyond those already announced. I think most would agree they aren’t (at this moment in time) as big as CMAT or Pulp (or Geese!) and could be a sub.

Saint Etienne have been announced for Latitude so they are definitely open to festival appearances.

Super Furry Animals plus with the excitement of reforming are sub level at EOTR?

I mean we had Sleaford Mods as a headliner…

Stereolab did Thursday before. So did Wilco. Damon subbed. Little Simz subbed.

ahhh those are all fair points. Only counter-thought is that Stereolab and Wilco weren't on the comeback trail at the time which adds to buzz and a more prominent position. It's also how they were able to book Pixies, which would have been impossible a few years prior.

I hear what you are saying but it’s relative. Even with the novelty factor they are playing fewer dates than CMAT’s sell-outs in equivalent venues with smaller outdoor shows (Alexandra Palace Park v Lido), and they are definitely nowhere near arenas and filling up the Pyramid stage.

Yes. I’m not saying they are as big these days as CMAT and Pulp but I do still think they are too big in this nostalgia comeback period to be a sub.

SFA not a sub. Never in a million years. Headliners traditionally Ally Pally sort of level, about 10,000. I'd say that's roughly in the SFA ballpark. Bigger than Sterolab, bigger than Wilco, I'd say.

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
