That's a fairy extravagant description of something that is simply saying they are a pop band. It's not taking down the artist in anyway and describing them as a pop band does not in anyway demean them. If I had said there was something wrong with booking them that's different but I haven't. Neil Young is a folk/rock artist, Olivia is a pop star, Skepta is a rapper. That's not genre police, that's just how it is and there is nothing wrong in that.

Absolutely nothing wrong. It was more a commentary on your suggestion they were "not" a rock band. Where have I also denied they're a pop band?

I've found you tend to have a history to be... If not dismissive, then occasionally reductive in your criticism here. You're entitled to that view too, let me stress! - heaven knows, I'm sure I come across as dismissive too for several acts, and likely as a prick - but my "genre police" jibe was more a reference to your language and discourse surrounding them.

Absolutely concur with @Andre91. Top pop band. Doesn't mean they're not a rock band either though, which is what your original post suggested and/or implied.

That there's not any British rock bands out there big enough to headline, doesn't make The 1975 a rock band.

Half their songs on Friday night could have easily been One Direction performing and no-one be any the wiser.

Take That's cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit was more "rock" than pretty much their entire set. That cringey attempt at thrash metal (People?) being the only possible exception. Matty then back to pouting and his Heart Radio bops.

Genuinely laughing at this! 😆

But as such, that’s your opinion that you are perfectly entitled to.  Each to their own & all that.

I said they were not a rock band because they aren't, which is fine. I found it more amusing they were called a rock band from the piece in question, that’s more amusement at the peace than anything downgrading towards them. I haven't said or suggested that you denied they were a pop band.

I have veen dismissive in the past yes with certain things but this wasn't dismissive. Sleep Token for example aren't a metal band, but they don't portray themselves as so either....but that's as far as that angle goes. Thats just an example. Metallica are a metal band, as are Iron Maiden for example and they portray that. But again, there is nothign again that.

I can't concur with Andre as I don’t really like them but that's nothing to do with it. I like a fair few pop options in music about so calling a band a pop band is not belittling to me. I saw Adele at Glastonbury, I saw Beyonce at Glastonbury, I go to 90s festivals as its a good laugh and fun. In this case, I dont believe The 1975 are rock at all, so yes I both suggested and implied that, but that's not a bad thing. A pop band can just be good at what they do without having to enter anything different.

Well, thank you for your counter-argument and reasoning. Let me stress my comments were not made with any malice, and I'm always keen to debate the merits.

That's is, it's no malice at all on either side, it's just opinion. I don't think you're bad or whatever for think they have rock elements, I just think whatever there may of that isn't enough to be in put in that area.

Out of reactions or I would have.

An interesting one re: The 1975 which I struggle to see - several older colleagues compare them to Simply Red and then fail to actually explain why. Anyone got a clue?

My colleague compares them to Maroon 5 believe it or not.  But then again he’s admitted he hasn’t listened to them properly, so I don’t know where he’s drawn that comparison from!  Although he does love “Part of the band” so 🤷

That is a bizarre one to me.

Most people I know who dislike them are older, though not exclusively.

I think it's more a case of if they were in 80s band generally that an older crowd liking them now. I've never got then myself but I see how they look and feel like they woukd suit that era.

    • Yea that's Blink for download

    • Blink 182 have been announced here at Rock im Park for next year this evening so you'd think Download will follow up from Green Day and get them. Be a mad miss if they don't.   In which case I'm going with Blink, Slipknot and the 3rd could be many options. If they get Foos for the 3rd it'll be the best trio I can remember for a long time. It would absolutely rip this years as a trio to shreds and I say that as a LP big fan.
