Hello everyone, we are long time festival goers but WOW this year is our family summer holiday and first festival abroad as a family. It will be me, my wife and two daughters in their early 20's. We've taken a big leap of faith, not knowing the festival or the city but the lineup is amazing and has stuff for all out tastes. We would really appreciate any tips and guidance about WOW and Gothenburg. We were worried about costs for food and drink but doesn't seem as bad as we first thought (or are we in for a shock?) Seems similar to London prices. Thanks in advance.

The main thing is that the festival site is only 1-2 miles from the city centre, so there are food and drink options on the roads up to the site (rather than it being in the middle of nowhere with nothing around, like many European festivals), and it makes getting there and back really easy.  The site is on a tram line, and obviously the trams get very busy after a headliner finishes, but it is an easy and safe walk back to the centre at the end of the night.  Gothenburg is a safe place anyway, plus there will be lots of people waking back (and it’s downhill!).

The main “shock” depending on your preferences might be that the food inside the site is all vegetarian (and was vegan until recently, but think they allow non-vegan vegetarian food now).  The other surprise when we first went was the alcohol restrictions (which mean there are certain areas where under 18s aren’t allowed, and different limits on strength of drinks in different areas), but you’re all over 18 so you don’t need to be concerned, and anyway the second time we went it had eased slightly.

The other thing to be aware of is Stay Out West – some of the (generally smaller) acts on the poster will be playing this rather than the main site. SOW is a late night programme of gigs in venues dotted around the city centre (some are clustered together), and you get in with your WOW wristband, but they are indoor venues and spaces are obviously limited – so if you wanted to see someone playing one of the first slots, you’d probably need to leave the main site before the headliner finishes.

The festival is quite corporate, with lots of sponsored installations, with the advantage that some of them have seating terraces or elevated viewing areas so gives you some different options for watching the acts (or just to have a sit down on a hot day – it can get surprisingly hot there!).

Anything else just ask!

Thanks for the info.

It seems like Gothenburg and WOW is almost exclusively contactless card payment everywhere, is that the case? Would we actually need much cash?

I went for the first time last year and didn't spend a single Swedish Krona in cash during my stay in Gothenburg. So, I would recommend to only bring max 50-100 euro in Swedish cash as my currency loss was quite big once exchanging back to Euro.

Same. I'm fairly sure the second time we went we didn't even take Swedish cash.  We went in via Oslo with a night there and didn't get any Norwegian cash either.

I'm going to Denmark next month (not music related) and not planning on taking cash there.

I continue to be really tempted by the Thursday night of this. It's a great run of acts. Is there likely to be some bad clashes though? Maybe OP isn't the best person to advise!

Thursday is great indeed! There might be some clashes but the 2 main stages (Flamingo and Azela) never have concerts at the same time and my guess is that at least QOTSA, Iggy Pop and Kite play there and possibly Beth Gibbons and Fontaines DC as well.

I live in Sweden and I think the last time I used cash here was 15 years ago or so.

just beat me too it! amazing announcement and did not expect it at all

I´m very happy with the announcement too! It´s especially unexpected since we´re already in mid-May and the festival have already sold out most ticket categories.

10 acts announced for Stay Out West (i.e. concerts in random locations that takes place after the festival have closed each night): Paula Tape, Isak Benjamin, Alan Sparhawk, Waterbaby, Maja Francis, Valkyrien Allstars, Cassandra Jenkins, Horse Vision, Talaboman and Girlband.

There should still be around 10-15 acts to be announced for the actual festival as well (not counting DJ acts etc).

Went to Sweden last week, don’t bother taking any cash in my opinion. All card. Just get a card that doesn’t charge you a transaction fee for foreign currencies, can get this on some credit cards and I’d imagine Revolut will offer a good/the best exchange rate. If you’re ever asked what currency to purchase in always choose the country you are in so you don’t get hit twice with the extra transaction fees. Hopefully this is helpful!

The film lineup looks very impressive.

Does anyone know if the Swedish films / shorts are likely to have English subtitles?

I don’t think Duolingo is going to teach me adequate Swedish by the start of August.

Yeah many films I'd like to see too! Not sure about the subtitles though but since they present the Swedish movies in English on their website I'd say there's a fair chance. So your Duolingo might be sufficient after all😉

    • It was awful during Father John Misty and I was close to the front. People just shouting and laughing their f-ing heads off about nothing in particular and being louder than the bloody stage.
    • Other things I noted yesterday, away from the obvious…   Positives: - an extra water point towards the back left of the main stages has appeared, which I believe is new for this year (and was much needed) - handing out free ponchos was a good touch  - caroline were fantastic. I’d never been in the Auditori Rockdelux before, it’s a wonderful venue and a great venue if you fancy a more chilled out environment  Negatives: - the talkers. I know it’s always bad here (and most festivals nowadays) but f**k me people wouldn’t shut up yesterday. I wonder if it was partly as a result of people being at artists they had little interest in (due to rain limiting their options), although it wasn’t great during blood orange. We’ll be making an effort to get a spot nearer the front for anyone we particularly care about over the weekend  - not enough staff around (and the ones that are there are largely useless). Most other festivals have them everywhere and are happy to help
