As a neutral I am glad Newcastle won and over the game they deserved it. You just know winning this trophy will mean more to the Newcastle fans than it would to Liverpool who have won a few in recent years.

I'm f**king delighted! I said years ago when the Saudis came in it'd obviously taint whenever we won a trophy but I'd still be celebrating, and it's great stuff!

 

This was us looking excellent, without our first choice left flank which is where most of our attacks have come this season.

 

Real shoutout to Livramento, who kept Salah anonymous, won several corners, and delivered the cross for our 2nd goal, while out of position! Seriously talented young player and love it.

 

I really didn't give us a chance a week ago with our form sketchy and missing Gordon/Hall and potentially Joelinton. We've had a horrid time against Liverpool for most of my lifetime and this was just brilliant. Incredible stuff

not sure they didnt try they just looked knackered tbh and Newcastle took advantage along with identifying a weakness on set plays . international break comes at a good time

It didn’t feel like Liverpool weren’t trying. However it was a team who have won trophies regularly over recent time who know they have one in the bag this season, against a team who have not won anything for years . Its not surprising Newcastle wanted it more.

I thought not playing Allison was strange. I don't think Kelleher was particularly at fault for either goal, but there's a chance Allison saves them. But what game left this season matters more?

Yeah very poor decision. I really think Allison would have saved the first, therefore automatically making it a different game.

nah kelleher is a more than able deputy , did amazing when he stood in while Alisson was injured,  none of this on him at all , whole team not up to it on the day

The question I would ask is if Liverpool players are really hurting after this match and I suspect it falls more into the would like to win , but quickly get over losing category. I therefore think it’s just not a priority which is why Kelleher is playing.

Can't lie - I thought we would have a very difficult game given the Toon's legacy of Wembley failure, the very good opposition, the fact we had to field a back-up left flank due to Hall & Gordon being unavailable, etc, etc. I was definitely more confident we'd win going into the defeat by Manchester United two years ago. Yet here we are.

 

Hooray for now finally having as many EFL Cup titles as QPR, Oxford, Luton, Swansea, Blackburn and Stoke. It may help we caught Liverpool in a low after they were taken to the distance in such an intense game against PSG in midweek, but we got the game plan bang on, scored two good goals, arguably unlucky not to get a third when Kelleher made a brilliant save to deny Isak. Good going.

 

Even if I was so sure we'd blow it when Chiesa scored. But maybe that's just because I'm a negative bastard.

Liverpool fans have been saying that playing the same side on a loop for several weeks was burning the squad out, and with the emotional rollercoaster of what happened against PSG in midweek, I can guess this was the game too far. They were a lot better when Curtis Jones came on, to the point where I think he should've started. Maybe Elliott or Gakpo too as Luis Diaz never really got going.

Can fixture congestion be an issue for Liverpool? They didn't have a champions league play off, out early in the FA Cup. Add that to no real pressure by anyone in the league. 

 

Perhaps it's more like if Salah doesn't play well, Liverpool options are limited.

I think Allison stood a chance of saving the first, but he's one of a small handful of keepers who would have. I don't think Kelleher was at fault per se, but it could've been a difference maker.

Thought the first goal was absolutely excellently placed, it was a brilliant finish - Kelleher is a very decent keeper and I don’t think anyone’s saving it. Harsh to call him out for it. There’s only about a foot width at the bottom of the post he can’t cover and it’s right in there.
 

I’m chuffed for Newcastle fans, it’s genuinely life changing for them, and let’s be fair for Liverpool it’s just another league cup final when they’ve won bloody loads in the last few decades. Another win wouldn’t have made the slightest bit of difference to them, whereas to Newcastle it’s not even just a generational event, it’s absolutely massive. History made. Good on them, I loved seeing the joy on everyone’s faces, it was great 👍🏻

That thought of limiting Salah limiting Liverpool is a fair one, not least as their fans have noted Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota have kinda been off it recently. But I thought there were going to be more changes from the PSG game - they played 9 players of a team that had just been worn out in an intense game against them, when some freshening up might have helped.

 

I'm aware our trio of Bruno, Tonali and Joelinton, when on it, is one of the better midfielders in the Premier League, but Mac Allister and Gravenberch looked worn out.

Burn deserves credit for getting it that pinpoint too tbf. That was not an easy shot. I like Kelleher as a keeper - he made a brilliant stop to deny Isak a second and he'd be a number one at many other clubs that don't have an Alisson around.

 

Liverpool were reigning champions, had won it twice since lockdown and are the team that had won it the most. So yeah, I think it's good for the tournament to get another first time winner, and indeed good for us to finally have something for the first time in forever.

Going to be a bit strange for Liverpool, whilst they will be champions. It is basically Klopp's team that's won it, add that it looking like they could lose Salah/Dijk/Trent.

Poor effort by Liverpool yesterday, not quite what went wrong other than maybe they are knackered.

 

No Champions League playoff but we shifted the Villa game that would have been this weekend to the same slot.

 

You can't blame Kelleher for that 1st goal, if anyone, it's the coaching team/manager for leaving that massive unit free on every corner.

 

Ultimately we didn't deserve to win, would have been funny it we'd snatched another in injury time, though. Just as the commentator was running through another of his eulagies about what was going on last time Newcastle won something.
