United don't need a new stadium, just the work and modernisation that should of been done last 10 years on OT.

 

Not a fan of new stadiums they have the bells and whistles. None of the History that the old stadiums have. 

 

Utd have spent many years taking the piss out of city, renting the council stadium. Now utd are going to be in bed with the government.

At least Liverpool had the sense to redevelop Anfield after years of talk about a new stadium

The biggest fault with new stadiums is they all seem to be stuck in business parks or retail parks out of town/city centres. To me part of the away game experience is going to the town before and exploring. I have done Doncaster , Coventry , Northampton in recent years and just feels you could be in a stadium anywhere.

Tbf for years the idea was building a new stadium in Stanley Park, so pretty much next door. Which tbf I guess would've certainly less of an adjustment that Everton will have to make when they move into their new stadium for next season.

 

Or indeed West Ham at the perennially unloved London Stadium.

At the very least, you think patching up the Great Waterfall of Old Trafford and controlling the rat infestation in the kitchens would be progress.

 

I'm aware Newcastle are in a position of having this discussion, given our overlords seemingly can't decide whether to renovate SJP or try to revive the old Shepherd/Hall idea of building a mega-stadium in the park round the back. It would be sad to move out of our strange lopsided ground, even if parts of it that date back to the 80s would probably need a spruce up before long anyway. Though I get the feeling some of our fans will just back whatever it is they decide to do, such is the blind faith some have.

 

Whether we try to build a cross between a circus tent and something out of the terrible Star Wars prequels of the early 2000s like Man Utd are proposing is another matter.

More amazingly is how utd are still the biggest story in English football. After a decade of under achievement and in the bottom half.

Well there's an entire generation of football fans where most are loving the schadenfreude and the rest are disillusioned glory supporters wanting answers about why they're not entitled to winning everything.

But utd have always had big gaps in success, massive gaps. For example 1968-1990, only 3 trophies won. 

 

I suppose utd will always be the biggest club by rival fans and the media.

Whenever I used go to the amex in Brighton I'd think what a great away day that would be if their stadium was anywhere near Brighton and not on a motorway in the middle of nowhere. 

 

Now I live in Brighton and it's still a pain in the arse to get to and nothing to do before the game once you get there.

Yes, but media is different now, and there's a lot more glory hunters from the 90s onwards.

That may well be but Man United's huge success between 1990 and 2013 plus a whole generation of pundits who played in that team that got used to the idea of forever success there and the fact there's a great deal of schadenfruede that no one told their younger generation of fans life was gonna be this way can explain a huge audience for downfall content now.

There's been a rumour for a few weeks of Darwin Nunez being offered a makeweight to try and persuade Newcastle to sell Isak to Anfield.

I'm not sure what this'll mean for Sunday tbf. Are we going to see a very motivated Liverpool who'll want to prove they're not in a complacency blip due to the Premier League title basically being theirs, or will there be a bit of a hangover from what happened against PSG last night?

 

Also, to think I heard for a while people were saying that Donnarumma had lost his touch. Coulda fooled me.

I think they've had two massive up ticks. Firstly from a generation who started supporting them due to sympathy around the Busby babes / Munich air disaster and then from being the top team when english football became globalized at the start of the premiership and really the cartel like behaviour of those original top clubs. There are long periods though when they haven't been a top top team, I think they had less league titles than Everton when Fergie came in?

Correct - Everton had won 9 when Fergie arrived in the late 80s, while Man United were stuck on 7 between 1967 and 1993. So, that is a bit of a drought, yes.

 

But yes, they had such a huge spike in the 90s to go from already being a big deal to probably the one with the biggest support and biggest amortisation of that support by charging top end prices for a ton of tat in the merch store.

Really enjoyed the game last night, just a shame about the outcome. 

 

Trent out for Sunday but Kanate should be fine. Glad it was a Tuesday and the final is Sunday, they're going to need some recovery time.

 

PSG are quite the team, amazing that they finally look decent after all the years of throwing all their cash at superstars.

United have always been the biggest story in English football. No matter when we are good or sh*t. 

 

Interesting website giving average attendances in the 80s, when utd were poor. United right at the top every season. Even the 70s when we were worse, majority at the top and we got relegated that decade. Highest average in the country, when in division 2 may I add.

All the reports after the first leg about "perfect away performance" and I felt it was batshit how they were talking about the team as a whole not just Allison specifically.
